3G usage?

I have had my iPhone 4S for 6 months and in settings under "mobile network data" I have received 834mb. I have had my iPad since 19th of March and in he same place says I have used 2.5gb. I haven't used it really any differently than my iPhone. I have never watched any YouTube etc when not of wifi. Just general email and we surfing. Has anyone else noticed anything like this. I am going to call Vodafone and see what they think my data is but would like to see if anyone elses iPad says the same?

Re: 3G usage?

Just got off the phone to vodafone. Was told I have used 512mb which makes much more sense (did download quite a few apps when it arrived forgetting to put on wifi which used 252mb in first day)

No idea why settins says 2.5gb unless it's taking into account wifi data too?

You can check the cellular usage:

Settings > General > Usage > Cellular Usage

Re: 3G usage?

That's what I'm looking at (called mobile usage as in UK)

Now says 3gb and I've only downloaded 1 app of 9mb and been on here.

I think it's gone a little wrong!

Are you aware that when the iPad is in sleep mode that the wifi also goes to sleep?

So if anything apps. notifications, mail try to do anything during that time they will use cellular data and not wifi. Do you have any apps that update themselves, mail set to 'fetch' other than manual, in fact anything that uses data automatically? In sleep mode this will all be chargeable against your data allowance.

Re: 3G usage?

Sorry but tats wrong.

If that was true how would the iPad and iPhone be set to backup to iCloud only when in sleep mode and when on wifi.

Wifi and 3G are both anti vevwhen in sleep mode but wifi will always be used as first preference.

Taking a read through this thread may throw a little light on the subject:

It is not the backing up to icloud that I was talking about.

In general use if the phone is not connected to a power source and the phone is not being used (i.e. screen lit) then any data will come / go over mobile data.

Re: 3G usage?

I see. That would only effect when no t plugged in and I dont have many things that would use data when in sleep. Also since starting this thread the fact I have had the iPad on all but about 5 minutes. Have been on wifi all the time, and my usage is now showing as 3.1gb. That's 600mb more than when I started. That's with just reading forums fir about 45 minutes. I can't see how that much usage is even possible let alone it counting as network data when I'm on wifi!

Re: 3G usage?

A simple test:

Turn off mobile data, Now make a note of the usage figure , do a few things on wif that you know use data and then check your usage again before you turn mobile data back on, what if anything is is the change in the usage figures?

Re: 3G usage?

Great minds think alike.

With just wifi (3G turned off) went on YouTube. Nothing changed.

With just 3G (wifi turned off) did the same and data usage went up.

Can't understand it though. Why do Vodafone say I've used 512mb when my iPad says 2.5gb. I know can be a couple of days out of date but still. That's a he'll of a lot of data in 2 days.
Then also why jump to 3.1gb when I'm sat at home on wifi within about 20 mins.

Will just have to wait and see what my first monthly bill says and see if they match up.

Re: 3G usage?

Now try Youtube it with both wifi and mobile data turned on, What happens to the figures?

Re: 3G usage?

Tried that and nothing changed.

Now looks like it is correct but doesn't explain why it went up earlier and why it is so high.

I think they must be inaccurate or something isn't right as my iPhone shows was last reset 14th October 2011 and I have used 834mb of data. I have just checked on my account online and my bill since December (so not including at least 1 month of data useage) says I have used 1074mb. How is that even possible when the phone has online used 834?

Considering I am doing nothing different on the iPad than the iPhone I cannot see why I would have used 3 times the daa in 2 weeks it has taken me over 5 months on my phone.

I'm very confused!

Re: 3G usage?

So at least you know it is working now. :smileyvery-happy:

There are a lot of possibilities but the chances of pinning down the cause is always trial and error.

It could be something as simple as your wifi connection dropping for a few seconds when the phone would have happily switched over to 3G. Do you have push notifications on or send disgnostics to Apple on, Location services enabled?

Probably best to keep and eye on your usage counter and then when you notice something you think is wrong you can at least trawl back over the past day or so and see what time it was used from your online account details.

For reasons of work I also download all emails that comes onto my PC from two sources onto my iPad, In the last month I have downloaed over 5GB from that source (according to my PC netmeter) and my iPad only shows me using 24MB during that period and I know  that was used when I was away from home . So personally I am satified that the connection to wifi does not in any way attributed  my wifi usage to my mobile data usage allowance /charges, Technically it is  not possible the Vodafone can see what your wifi is doing.

Re: 3G usage?

Thanks for your help.

I will just keep an eye on it. I have reset now and seems to be staying on 0kb.

I'll also call Vodafone middle of next week to see what my usage is then so I know it is up to date.

Re: 3G usage?

Hi AndyiPhone

Thanks for your posts and thanks to kids for helping out with this one.

I know that you've been checking your cellular data usage on your devices but do you have the My Vodafone app downloaded as these should give you a more accurate reflection of what you're actually using?

I'd also check My Account after your first bill has been produced and if there's anything looking slightly abnormal then please get in contact with us again and our team will take a look at this for you.

Thanks

Simon
