hello, my iphones 3g hasnt worked since i brought it and was wondering do i need to set up a personal hotspot? all my other friends who have 3g on there iphones work perfectly without a personal hotspot.

Could you tell me which model iPhone you are using?

What software version is it running?

I've checked your profile postcode and 3G in your locality is almost non-existent with little pockets of limited coverage here and there. You can see what coverage you would expect to see at the link below. Just type in your postcode

the model is iphone 4 but im not sure what version its on.

also i try to use my 3g in college but doesnt work.

Can you give us the full postcode of your college? We’ll then be able to check to see if 3G is available there.

yep the college is LN2 5HQ

however most my friends can get on 3g there so im not sure why i cant

im not sure my 3g works atall.

Hey chris9999,

I must admit that it is strange to see that your friends on Vodafone can pick up 3G however you can’t on your phone which would indicate that it is either a SIM or handset issue rather than a fault with the local site.

As you have an iPhone 3G, please can you go into the settings menu and double check that 3G is active?

Also can you confirm how old your SIM card is?

If older tan 18 months I would recommend getting a SIM change done through your local Vodafone store.

It may also be worth checking your SIM in another phone and another SIM in your phone to see if the issue follows the SIM or not.

Give this a go and let me know how you get on.

hi thanks for your replies.

I must say that the sim is only a few months old but not sure if i should get a new one but if i do and it doesnt work what should i do?

i do not have another phone to try this sim aswell however everything else works like wifi 

will a personal hotspot help my 3g?

Thank you for your posts.

The Personal Hotspot will not effect the 3G connection.

I have checked the site in your area close to the college and this is taking traffic as normal so there may be a fault with the device.

Two things to try:

1. Turn airplane mode to 'on, then take the sim card out and wait a few minutes then put the sim card back in and turn airplane mode 'off.

2. If that does not a difference try a hard reset;

Hold both the home and on/off button down until the Apple logo appears (ignore the red slider) then release the buttons and wait for the phone to reboot istself , you won'y lose any data.

You do have Mobile Data turned on in the setting don't you?

Are you near a Vodafone or Apple store? If so pop in there and ask them to try it with one of their sims in your phone, if it works then the problem is your sim card and Vodafone can give you a new one in store. If it is the phone that is the problem then your best bet is to go to an Apple store and they will replace it on the spot. Apple will also replace it by post as it is under warranty.
