I have recently acquired my Dads old iphone 3G, which is 1 year old from 02. I immediately updated the OS to 4.

I then took it to a random shop (not official 02 shop) to get it unlocked so my Vodafone pay monthly sim would work in this handset, they also Jailbroke it.

Immediately after this, I checked the internet and google loaded up, I made a phonecall and sent a text. It all worked fine.

5 minutes later, the internet stopped working completely. Some server error?

Several phonecalls to Vodafone later, I have an iPhone data plan on my contract, and settings to change the APN given to me.

I go to the APN settings to try and change them, but, there is no option to change them. Just an on/off switch. Useful.

After trawling the internet, I cannot find anything useful that works to fix this issue. I also took the phone back to the original shop that unlocked it to see what they could do, but they told me they can't fix it.

Any ideas?

Then... how was it unlocked.. ehh odd.Id update it and restore it and then get O2 to unlock it properly mate.

Sorry if its retardedly easy (not had an iphone before) how does one update and restore it?

I dont know how it was unlocked, I just took it to some guys who did it.... don't know the specifics of it. But I updated the firmware from.. whatever it was before, to the new iOS4 before they 'unlocked it'

I didnt know an os 4 unlock was avail, i currently have mine jailbroke.. ill check settings in a mo..

To generally update restore you plug in USB cable, open itunes and left side click phone and there should be an option in there... but let me check my settings first mate

I will try the update restore tonight when I get home from work,

I just don't understand why the option to be able to edit the APN settings has disappeared... or perhaps it was never there to start with?

Have you connected to iTunes and updated the firmware again since it was unlocked?

If so that is the problem, once you unoficially unlock an iPhone the next time that you connect to iTunes to update it you will find it is locked again.

Does the phone part of the iPhone still work i.e. can you still make calls?

There is also the added problem that much of the ios4 update does not work with the 3g so that may also be causing you difficulties. I would be inclined to do as Carl suggest, restore it then ask O2 to unlock it for you as Apple will not give you any help with a jailbroken phone.

I haven't updated the firmware again

actually, I spoke to vodafone and they tried to tell me to do that, and I was trying to do it while on my other phone to them

but they told me it would automatically do it..
and when it didnt....
I couldn't find any other option of manually telling it to update...

Perhaps I missed something. I will try that again

There is another way... switchin the phone off, once off... hold the home (circle) button for 10 seconds.. once 10s gone hold the lock button up top so youre holding together and the itunes logo should appear.. once thats done plug into the computer.. itll come up "itunes has detected iiphone in recovery

theres nothing 'in there', next to cellular data network its literally just a button next to it with the option of on/off

technically you can do it now mate... to get out of the itunes logo hold the home and lock together for 10 seconds.... just out of curiosity.... what happens when you click on for apn?

i just tried it twice,

turned it off

held the circular button plus the hold button for 10 seconds, a little apple sign appeared then disappeared

turned it back on, went back to settings general network, and it says Cellular Data, on/off

when i turn it on, underneath the Data Roaming on/off option becomes available to click but nothing else...

Have you connected to iTunes and updated the firmware again since it was unlocked?

I forgot to mention that Yep, Calling and Texting appears to be fine, no issues there

do you think reverting back to whatever firmware was on there last will help the situation?

Its not something I'd love to do.. but if it makes the phone work..

I'm really not sure what the 'shop' have done to your phone so I think the best thing to do would be to revert to the previous firmware.
