Apple iPhone 3GS - Will My Current SIM Work In The Phone?

Hi

I got an old SIM in a Blackberry Storm which works for texting (originally out of an old Nokia phone), though I got no data plan.

I'd like to switch to iPhone now I found an app I can use for texting in place of the tiny qwerty keyboard. I'm hanging on to see if Apple store offer engraving for xmas on new iPhones as it always says 'out of stock' when I looked on vodafone site recently for the 3GS. (Not sure if that only applies to the website or means you'd have no 3GS's in any stores either?)

My question is, if I got a 3GS so I can just put my old SIM card in - which is already active, is it going to work?

I've heard so many stories of problems with reception and activation of iPhones that I'm wondering if it be safer to just get a new SIM so I have at least one working phone if I have any problems? Maybe I could then ring up to transfer my old number to new iPhone once I had managed to get it up and running?

I may get chance to get to the vodafone in a shopping centre (Leeds) in a few weeks (I'm mainly housebound but occasionally people take me shopping!) would they be able to activate the phone in the store for me or could I only do this by connecting it to my own Mac?

Can I activate the phone BEFORE the shop put the SIM in (to download apps onto it etc) or would it only work after the sim (or microsim for iphone4 - still deciding which to go for! ) was put in?

Lastly - people mentioned reception problems for iphone4 - are these fixed yet? will it still work if its in a case? I'm registered for emergency SMS as also wheelchair user and live alone so its vital I had a signal on it if I was unable to get to my regular textphone - which is up on a table (example if fell on floor) Don't fancy been stuck there days cos I found I had no signal on my new £500 mobile phone!!!

which one would be most reliable for me?.. to be used mainly for texting and as mobile communication aid via text-to-speech app and phone in speakercase to boost volume output for speech

Thanks

Hi Kati, wow I cant imagine a phone conversation with you being short n sweet!

Anyway, the first thing is yes you can use your existing sim on an iPhone, provided the iPhone is of the same network or unlocked. However as you have no data, it is highly recommended you add a data plan or even switch to one of Vodafone's iPhone plans. This is because a lot of the Apps use data.

With regards to the sim card itself, if its really old then I recommend you getting a new sim card. You dont have to change your number or price plan with a new sim card, you simply call 191 when you receive it and then they will transfer your phone number to the new sim. Its advisable you back up your phone numbers as the numbers wont get transferred over to the new sim card. The Vodafone store or Customer Services should help you with this, but you can always copy your numbers onto your PC and keep a copy on your Blackberry.

iTunes wont work with your phone without a sim card. It needs a working network for it to sync and work with your phone, after which you can set up an iTunes account. After you put your sim card in your iPhone, connect it to iTunes and then you can sync it and back up your phone contents. Then you can set up an iTunes account.

With regards to the iPhone 4, I havent got one but I know people who do have it and they dont have signal issues with the current operating system, 4.1. I have the 3GS and I think its the best phone I have ever had. Yeah the signal can be dodgy at times, it might be worthwhile checking the Vodafone signal coverage in your area to make sure your ok.

Both the iPhone 4 and 3GS function in the same way, the notable differences being that the iPhone 4 has a better display, is marginely faster and has a better camera with Flash, and HD recording. Otherwise there is no other differences which are significant.

Why dont you try the iPhones out in an Apple store before buying them? Im pretty sure you'll love it but if it gives you peace of mind, hey thats important.

Let me know if you need other advise.

Apple iPhone 3GS - Will My Current SIM Work In The Phone?

Hi Kati,

Thank you for posting. Firstly, I can confirm that your current SIM would work in an iPhone, however if you don't have a data plan, I'd recommend adding one of our Mobile Internet Packs. Alternatively, if you're due an upgrade soon or are looking to start a contract then we'll be able to arrange a new iPhone for you. Just use the details in our Upgrades Announcement to contact us, Once we have your email we'll be in touch as soon as we can :).

Apple iPhone 3GS - Will My Current SIM Work In The Phone?

lol@acekool! sorry I get carried away, its so much easier for me type it than speak it!

@george from vodafone: so do you have the 3GS in your stores? on website it says 'out of stock' all time? I am wanting it on PAYG so can just top up when credit runs down, as I only SMS and can't use voice calls I don't get through the minimum monthly contracts usually and works out too expensive.

I'm waiting for apple to get back to me, if they not gonna offer engraving on iPhone I probably wait until my friend takes me shopping and just buy iphone instore with Sim card put in by vodafone, then hopefully it will work fine when I connect it to my Mac. I already have iTunes account as I have the wi-fi only iPad too.

I don't really need a Data plan as I'm mostly housebound and have daily access to my wi-fi and Mac for downloading apps.

Thanks

Apple iPhone 3GS - Will My Current SIM Work In The Phone?

Hi there katilea,

If you're not going to be using the mobile internet, then you're right, no data plan will be required.

I'm afraid the stcok reports only refer to telesales ond online stock lists as we don't have access to store stock information. I'm led to believe that there's not just a shortage on V0pdafone, but also on other networks and other countries too!

Let me know how you get on.

Cheers,

Apple iPhone 3GS - Will My Current SIM Work In The Phone?

Thanks Lee

So if I manage to get a phone via apple can I just get a new PAYG SIM with a new number on sent to me? That way I still have my existing number working for emergencies until the iPhone is fully set up and activated.

Not sure if the shortage is with the actual phones or the regular SIMS (3GS) or microsims (4) that is the problem??

I left your feedback.

Apple iPhone 3GS - Will My Current SIM Work In The Phone?

Hi Kati,

If you get an iPhone 3Gs, you will be able to use a new PAYG SIM in the phone or any existing Vodafone SIM in the phone.

If you get an iPhone 4, you will need to get a number transfered to a Micro SIM before you can use the handset.

If you have any other questions, please let us know. ;)

Apple iPhone 3GS - Will My Current SIM Work In The Phone?

So... if I bought the iPhone from you online (vodafone store), you could send it with SIM or microSIM already in it for me? (with new number ready) or would I have to get someone to put it in phone for me so I can connect it to Mac to activate it?

I've never put any of SIM's in my phones, they always been done by the store but then usually you can turn them on straight away and know they work before you leave the shop.. but you can't do this with iPhones? They still won't work till I'd got it home and connected it to iTunes?

I'm thinking maybe easier to get phone delivered first before shopping date then if I can't get it working I can take it in store when my friend takes me xmas shopping!! If I have managed to get it working then maybe I can switch my old number to new phone! (with remaining credit from that phone?)

You can tell its a while since I bought a new phone they were no where near this complicated when I got my last new one.. lol!

Apple iPhone 3GS - Will My Current SIM Work In The Phone?

ok I did it! Decided to get iPhone from vodafone online, just ordered it this morning so hopefully everything runs smoothly when it gets here! I finally decided to go with the iPhone 4 for the video editing and iMovie functions too!

I maybe back if I can't work out how to get it set up!! It says it comes with microsim so hoping it means it will be inside it and all I have to do is connect it to iTunes to activate it!

Decided not to get it engraved, in case it doesn't work for me as a communication aid I can resell it then if need to. fingers crossed!

Thanks for your advice guys. :D
