Background buzzing noise whilst making call on iPhone 3GS

I have  16GB 3GS which is 22 months old. It is running IOS 5.0. Even before the software upgrade, intermitently whilst talking on the phone, I get a buzzing/clicking background noise in the earpiece of the phone, which is the same as the "GSM chatter" you get when you put a GSM phone near a radio. The person at the other end of the call has also commented on the noise.

This never happens during a call whilst using the factory fitted bluetooth handsfree kit in my car.

Any suggestions what I can do to stop the problem - yes, I could go for a phone upgrade but am keen to keep hold of my current iphone.

Thanks.

Hi Simondo49.

It does sound more like an issue with the actual hardware itself, possibly the internal speaker.

If you took out Apple Care, then this is a no brainer, simply get an Apple Genius appointment and they are likely to exchange the device for you. Without this then you are possibly looking at a repair cost to resolve this, but again going directly to Apple may be your best option.

[ Edited ]

I've just got a Samung Galaxy S2 and just moved to Vodafone from Orange. I seem to get the GSM chatter on my phone too - albeit quietly. If I turn off GSM on the settings of the phone it seems to be OK.

I didn't have this problem with my Orange sim in it, so I'm not sure it's a hardware fault.

Any other ideas?

Hi Wingee

Thank you for your post and a very warm welcome to the eForum. :smileyhappy:

This is a strange one as you mention it is fine using an Orange SIM but not a Vodafone SIM?

Are you using the latest software for your device? I would also recommend performing a reset on your device, to do this

 - Switch the handset on
 - Whilst powered up, remove the SIM card and battery
 - Put the battery back in and switch on
 - Wait a couple of minutes, then remove the battery again
 - Replace the SIM and battery and switch back on

Where did you obtain the device? If this is a Vodafone handset then this would be covered under the manufacturers warranty, however it may first be worth trying a new SIM which can be picked up for free at your local Vodafone Store.

Please back up all of your information first and foremost.

Please visit your local store to obtain a SIM card, if the store is some distance I would be happy to send a SIM through the post although this will take longer, just complete and reply to the email I have sent to your address you registered with on here and I can arrange this for you.

Many Thanks
