Let me firstly welcome you to the Vodafone eForum family. It’s always nice to see new faces around here.

You are correct. The only BT Openzone hotspots that can be used are premium hotspots. This is fully explained in the BT Openzone WiFi help pages. You cannot use the BT Fon Network, which are the shared hotspots created from BT Home Hubs, for people subscribed to the Fon network. This is a BT Total Broadband customer only option.

The BT Openzone WiFi login is for use on your mobile device only, not a general login for any WiFi device, and is not presented or sold as anything other than this. The same with the Data Traveller product, which is sold as a means to connect your Vodafone mobile device outside the UK, without having to pay any additional data charges.  There are other products available for connecting you laptop etc to Mobile Data while roaming, but Data Traveller is not marketed, or intended to do this function.

whats the difference between premium openzone and normal bt openzone, ive
attached a screen grab of when i enter my MY ACCOUNT details, and it doesn't
recognize them, is the screen grab from a premium openzone or normal openzone
whatever the difference is!

this all seems a bit smoke and mirrors and not explained properly when you take out the price plan

ive spoke to various vodafone personnel, 2nd line 3rd line, fishing line, and all i get from them is re-set account and register for wi-fi which ive done a zillion times.

how do you access a openzone with a vodafone logo on the landing page

please can you help from a very frustrated customer

Hi meatflea,

As far as your access with your allowance goes, there is no difference between public open hotspots and premium hotspots on BT Openzone. Whilst usually the Premium hotspots are ones BT charge people to use, these are now included in your allowance.

Looking at the screenshot you attached, that looks like a large-screen device such as a laptop that you're trying to log in with. Please note that the Vodafone allowance is only available on your Vodafone mobile device - the system looks for a Vodafone SIM in the device in order to offer the option to connect via Vodafone. If you're trying to use a laptop tethered to a phone, for example, then this will not be recognised.

So that we can see if this is where the issue may lie, can you confirm what device or handset you have with Vodafone and what happens when you try to connect with that?

I have a Huawei K4505 USB Modem stick with a vodafone sim, im on a contract pay monthly and have 3gb allowance plus 1gb free wifi with bt openzone. ive been told by various members of the vodafone team that the landing page should have a vodafone logo?

also i spoke to someone yesterday over the phone suggesting that the openzone im trying to connect to is a bt problem and vodafone is not allowed to access this! so ive got to ring bt now! 

im getting passed from pillow to post and still nothing has been resolved, surely how hard is it to log on to a wifi which im supposed to be allowed access to!

never expected this from vodafone, very dissapointed

before you suggest to, reset my password, register for wifi, close and reopen account.  this has all been done a loads of times.

ive must of rang 20 times in the last week and get fobbed off with 2nd lime team 3rd line team and a team. 

any help would be appreciated dave

For anyone that is interested, i managed to resolve this one for myself!

some bt openzones wont allow vodafone users to access wifi, maybe because the openzone is someone else's personal account and you would be trying to piggy back it!

the only ones that work are big corporate ones like cafe nero, starbucks etc

what you should see when you logon to openzone through one of these is my attached picture called NERO which i logged onto in a cafe nero near me.

then there is a drag down menu where it says login and provider, drag this down and select vodafone UK and then you'll be diredted to another screen (see attached LOGON picture) this is where you type in your MY ACCOUNT username and password

hey presto you are now up and running

make sure you remember to log out else it'll keep on running in the background

i dont know why someone and vodafone couldn't of explaibned this to me!

hope this helps someone because it drove me mad!

Just to add some further information for others who may find it useful in deciding what services not to buy: the Samsung Galaxy S2 is not even compatible with any of the BT Openzone routers to start with.

Hi There, 

I have the same problem at the above user. Where it takes me to the 'computer' version of the login page rather than the mobile version which would allow me to select Vodafone. However, I am doing this on my HTC Sensation!!! If it is the case that I can't login to the BT Openzone network outside of cafe's such as Starbucks than that's pretty damn poor service. This should be mentioned at the stage where you sign a contract. It should be clear to see and understand. The fact that the staff in store or on the customer service line don't even seem to know this is even worse. 

Can somone from Vodafone please confirm this and explain why it isn't common knowledge? I have also been on the phone several times and contacting tech support via email... The best explanation they ever give is to reset your 'my account' which doesn't do anything other than cause inconvenience.

Thanks for your post here. I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble with this. I appreciate how frustrating this must be for you.

This is correct, you’re not going to have access to peoples personal BT Openzone connections, you only get free Wi-Fi access to the ones described above like in airports/McDonalds/Café Nero etc.

I can’t explain why this isn’t common knowledge, I can only apologise that you weren’t told this.

Sorry Barry but that is not correct!  I was sold a product of BT Openzone 2 GB for my laptop, plus I also have 2 phones with 2 GB each on them for BT Openzone.  Nothing stated in any documentation that this is not for the full services of BT Openzone.

Why do we need one at Mc Donald’s?  They have The Cloud, which incidentally works better than BT Openzone.  A burger shop that provides better telecommunications than a telephone company!  Very annoyed with Vodafone!
