CALL FAILED- Why have to revert to 2G Calls on Vodafone's wonderful 3G network

Continuation of an earlier post about CALL FAILED appearing on 80% of calls.

Vodafone have advised the following to another post with the same problem

"Finally, can you confirm if you've tried switching the handset to 2G only? If the problem is 3G, then this will force the phone to stop trying on a connection check on the 2G signal. If there is a 3G fault, then this will show an immediate improvement"

If this is found to resolve the problem then is this an acceptable resolution or do vodafone further investigate the 3G network? Are Vodafone seriously telling customers to switch off 3G to make calls. Like have a sports car with a 1l engine....

Aylesbury HP20 2NX has had this problem for last year. Local store in Aylesbury advises EVERYONE to switch off 3G as the local mast cannot cope with the demand. No problems using the 3G itself but problem making calls only.

Are customers being mislead and cheated?  Afterall the smartphones rely of 3G network.

Re: CALL FAILED- Why have to revert to 2G Calls on Vodafone's wonderful 3G network

Hi edahuk

I can appreciate how annoying this is,  my home postcode has 2 bars of GSM so I  usually have to go outside to make and receive calls.

The difference between 2G and 3G is that 3G allows for faster data transfer,  this bandwidth doesnt effect calls or call qaulity.  I would usually advise a customer to keep the phone on 2G for battery life reasons,  if they are sending data in emails etc I would advise them to switch to the 3G band to send but I'm sure most of the community would agree that 2G  does save the majority of smartphone battery life.  Smartphones don't rely on UMTS technologies hence the reason they have WIFI and the GSM band included.

I've had a look at your local postcode, and I noticed HP20 2NX is quite close to the HM Young offenders institution   which would employ cell jamming which would explain if close to this area why signal isnt great the 3G sites are located to the rear of the insitution  I can see that there is a variable signal for 3G in and around aylesbury.  With this in mind I also would advise you to keep your phone on 2G when attempting to make calls.

Thanks

Would it not be a better idea to take the mobile phones away from the young offenders or would that then contravene the Human Rights act.:smileyvery-happy:

Re: CALL FAILED- Why have to revert to 2G Calls on Vodafone's wonderful 3G network

You still have not really answered my question. Is switching to 2G really the answer?

1) Why should i have to keep flicking from 2G and 3G?  It grossly affects the whole smartphone experience having to change from 2G to 3G.

2) The Prison answer is unreasonable.  The local Vodafone stores says that the local 3G Mast can't with the amount of local traffic. There seems to be a disconnect between what the local store says and what Vodafone support say.

I'll ask my question again. Is it acceptable to ask customers to keep switiching bewtween 2G-3G to make calls and to use Internet based services. Are you saying your network cannot cope?

This sounds very much like a problem we have in the south west. Does the 1st post sound like the problem you are having? http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/Using-the-network/Network-Problems-in-Exeter-EX4/td-p/629009

If so I suguest you call 191 and ask to speak to 2nd line support.
