Cancel or early upgrade!

My IPhone is currently not working due to connection problems. It hasn't been dropped or anything. I have took into store and called up. Surely if it is a service problem they sould doo more to fix it. Anyway I am due an upgrade next month. I have called up asking if it was possible for an early upgrade as it doesn't make sense to send it away only to be hit with a charge to fix it. I also asked to change my tarriff as i don't use even 30% of it, this all fell on deaf ears. I have been thinking of canceling my contract as the help from vodafone has been terrible. I just want this sorted as it has been a good month i have paid for, while not getting the beneifts.
Can you change your tarriff once the upgarde is avaiable?
Is it best to wait for the upgrade?
Is it best to cancel and leave vodafone?
I would really appreciate some advice.

When you say connection problems - is it an issue with your iPhone not connecting to the Network or is it a problem with the network in your area? Have you tried the Network Troubleshooting Guide to try narrow down the problem?
Upgrades can only be done in the last 50 days of your contract. Once you are able to upgrade you can change your tariff. If you decided to cancel your contract you would need to pay the Early Termination Fee. This is the number of months of remaining line rental less VAT and less a 2% discount.

I am sure it is a handset issue. I can recieve wifi no problem and for a short period a 3G signal in some areas but that has also gone. I have ried everything from a reboot, reset, software update, new sim etc. It is just frustarating as it is a month till upgrade yet if i send my phone away by the time it is back i may be able for upgrade. This may also include a charge no doubt. Through all this time i am still coughing up for a tarrif i don't even get any use out of or a phone that is totally useless.
