Help me! unexpected WAP charges.

I am monthly pay user. today I found expected WAP charge on my bill.  The charge has been given every day at same price, same time.  (00:00, and 0.833GBP every day).    Suddenly from 01.2011 this charge has been started every day. Of course, I have never used my mobile at 00:00 every day. Usually I turn off my mobile at night.   I have already asked VODAFONE today. Someone has same issue before ?  Is this system issue at Vodafone?  My mobile is Sony W715.  Many thanks for advice in advance

Firstly let me be the first person to offer a very warm welcome to the Vodafone eForum from all of the team and say that its always nice to see a new face around here. :smileyhappy:

So we can get to the bottom of these charges for you we will need to take a look at your account, to do this I have sent you a quick email, please reply with your details and I will get one of our team to look into this further for you.

Re: Help me! unexpected WAP charges.

Sorry, James.

yesterday, I was still charged 1.ooGBP(0.833GBP +VAT) without regard to using internet.:smileysad:

First of all, I want to stop the charge.

What should I do ?   Should I change setting on my mobile ?

Someone knows how to stop?

Re: Help me! unexpected WAP charges.

I'm having exactly the same problem! I'm a new customer (as of 22 march) with an iphone on £10 a month 30 day notice SIM only. I too have had the same mysterious 83p charges. I have used the internet via my broadband at home but surely i'm not paying for the privilege of connecting wirelessly to my own broadband at home???

i've emailed and terminated my account under the distance selling cooling off period, and i will stick with that unless i'm provided with a sensible explanation. Sent two messages so far (one last week, one today) but no reply. Not the best first impression of vodafone  (this combined with my name being spelled incorrectly on my bill & correspondance despite me spelling it out clearly)

Would love to be pleasantly surprised wirh an explanation and a refund of the extra charges on top of my £10, otherwise it's off to another provider for me, unforttunately.

Do you have any apps that update thmselves automatically? Do you have your email set to push?

It is worth knowing that if the phone is in sleep mode (not switched off) then unless something was using the wifi connection when it went into sleep mode any data will come / go via your cellular data and not over wifi.

To save the battery wifi turns itself off a few minutes after the phone goes to sleep, so anything that requires data during the time the phone is sleeping will use your cellular data and you will be charged for it.

Turn your cellular data (settings) off for a few days and see if the charge still occurs, if not then you will know it is something on your phone is doing an ET and trying to 'call home'.

Re: Help me! unexpected WAP charges.

Also having this problem. We seem to contact vodafone every month and get nowhere. Also emailed them numerous times to which they mysteriously don't receive (until you say you want to cancel contracts that is).Tell them same info over and over again and just get spoken to like an idiot. The customer service we've received is nothing short of awful !!!

Re: Help me! unexpected WAP charges.

Have you got any apps that update themselves automatically?

The daily charge around midnight is the accumulated charge for the day, it is worth looking at how your apps or email use wifi, as stated above once your phone goes into sleep mode, unless there is already anything connected to to wifi and it  downloading / uploading data, any data in or out will incur a wap charge until the phone is woken up manually by you.

Re: Help me! unexpected WAP charges.

How reassuring that other people are getting the same charges on their bills.  I have never used my phone (Nokia XPress Music 5800) for the internet and have no intention of doing so.  Vodafone seem unable to advise me on this other than give me a number to ring Nokia which leaves you hanging on for so long you have no choice but to ring off.

As far as I can see Vodafone are charging me this and they should be the people putting it right.  Have just analysed my bills and have paid nearly £75 so far.

Has anyone got to the bottom of this yet?  Or does anyone have a fix to get it stopped.  I am so angry about this that I am seriously thinking about changing my service provider having been with Vodafone for more years than I care to remember!

Re: Help me! unexpected WAP charges.

Hi All,

What we need to keep in mind here is that there is more to “data” than just “Mobile Internet” - there are a number of other ways that data could have been used on the handset.

-         GPS: If you have any GPS systems switched on or location services on any apps activated

-         Any Apps which receive push alerts. These use a similar system to BlackBerry’s where they trigger a search on the server and then transmit either a failure or the new information to the device.

-         BlackBerry’s – see above information

-         Any app which updates over time. These don’t receive data immediately, but the next time you load the app or request a search

-         Social networking apps

-         Any emails sent or received

This is not an exclusive list, but if you’ve used any of these without connecting vi Wi-Fi then these would be the likely reason for dipping into the standard daily allowance.

If you haven’t, post a list of what you generally use and we can see if anything stands out for you.

Kind regards

Dave

Re: Help me! unexpected WAP charges.

Hi.

ive just phoned vodafone to complain about the very same issue.

i have had my handset for almost a year but have not incurred these WAP charges until my April bill....same 83p a time and at midnight. I have been credited £10 into my account but told that if i incur any more, then it will be my responsibility and that I have to phone Samsung and ask them to not send auto-updates to my phone.

i have the same problem with my second handset, which was in use from early January. the operator told me that my daughter must be accessing via Wap at bang on midnight each time for the 83p also. I told him that all data services i could disable were disabled on this phone. He sent me a txt to my primary handset telling me how to change from contract wap to payg wap to stop the auto-updating but the instructions were not for then phone in question but hey..it now says that handset is on payg so i guess i can leave it at that-i'll just have to watch my account very closely.

and as for phoning samsung-really?

im due for an 'upgrade' now...thing is, i want a phone that doesnt look like its been made by duplo; do not want to be charged for anything that i do not initiate and also to not be palmed off to the manufacturer when its vodafone who charge me and nobody else...and ive been with them for 14 yrs.

mmm...got some thinking to do i think over what i can have and do....im just not a happy bunny

Re: Help me! unexpected WAP charges.

I upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy Mini in May. I had my first bill today and from the day of delivery I have been receiving the 83p WAP charge, usually for accessing at 0:00 but can be anytime of the day, every day.

I use the phone purely as a phone. With the exception of one music download via the vodafone web I do not use the internet, email, gps, any of the preinstalled apps etc.

I even have a 'widget' on my home screen that tells me how many apps are running and this says 0.

So far I have clocked up £30 of charges over the 6 weeks I have had the phone. I rang vodafone today and although they were very nice they couldnt offer any explanation and clearly thought I had been accessing the web.

No offer of any refund of charges, even though I have not used the internet or accessed any data.

They have put a GPRS bar on my phone so that the internet cannot be accessed now. This is fine if it solves the problem but it does mean I cant even send pictures to friends and family anymore.

Has anyone managed to resolve this yet? or able to offer any advice?

Hi FG,

Thanks

Re: Help me! unexpected WAP charges.

Firstly there is no charge levied for wifi data unless you have subscribed to a service away from your home wifi.

The setting to toggle to 'Off' is Cellular Data'

It should also be remembered that if you are using wifi that only works while the phone is 'awake' when the phone is in sleep mode wifi stops working unless it was already transmitting/receiving data. Once that data transmission ends the wifi diconnects from the phone until the phone is woken up again.

Re: Help me! unexpected WAP charges.

I've just noticed I've been getting these charges now for quite some time. My fault for not noticing sooner but paying by direct debit lets these things pass by a lot easier I guess...

So, I'm now about £50 down thanks to 83p of wap charges every morning between 3 and 4 am. Great. And now I find out that all I needed to do was to flick a switch to prevent this. It would have been nice had Vodafone bothered to reply to my email about this but they haven't. Plus it would be nice if there was some sort of way to check for this rather than rack up bills before anything can be done about it. But hey, if I'd bought some internet credits from vodafone this could have been avoided. So I guess it's my fault.

So, I'm off to 3. I've been with Vodafone since appoximately 1995 but this has really annoyed me.

In fairness to Vodafone there is.

If you are registered for an online account you can check the billing of your plan at anytime.
