i am getting an american iphone 3gs on at&t in a week and i wanted to ask a few questions.
i am on vodafone in the uk and have unlimited internet on my contract. i was wondering if i need to unlock the iphone before it works with my vodafone simcard and how do i do that?
also, once i unlock it, will safari browser work on my iphone? and do i need to change some settings to make it work? how do i do that?
and, will all the applications on the iphone work once i've done this? for example, will i be able to download things from the app store and the itunes store?
finally, what are the things i need to consider with software updates etc? i've been told that if you unlock your iphone and then try to update the software, then it can block the iphone, sometimes permanently. is this true?
sorry to bombard you guys with all these questions. its just that i'm really confused.
thanks

Hi there, im currently running an unlocked 3gs on vodafone and have all functions working i.e. texts (sms &mms) app store, safari and so on.
I unlocked using the following site iphoneunlockuk.com
luckily they keep updating their software as apple does so you can always re-unlock the phone if needs be (usually no extra cost for small updates)
As far as the internet goes, im only using that over my wifi connection at the mo and have as yet not worked out how to use mobile internet on it (like 3g).
i think thats it! any questions ill try and help lol

Welcome to the eForum
Kevin86iek is absolutely right in that you can unlock your iPhone to accept most SIM cards though be sure to check your warranty small-print before running any third-party software on your phone
If you're a frequent flyer between the UK and US have you checked out Vodafone My Account? This is a great, time-saving service where you can manage your plans and bills completely online anytime, anywhere.
If you have any queries feel free to drop us a post.
Thanks,
Adam

Morning tinytom101,
Welcome to the eForumthis is a really good question. While we do not officially support the iPhone on our network you've come to the right place. We have quite a community here of customers who successfully run the iPhone on the Vodafone Network. I'm sure many of them will be willing to lend a helping hand. My experience is the vast majority of services do run on this phone and our team are happy to help as best as we can to get you up and running.

Just 2 things:
what are the vodafone settings needed in order to access mobile internet and 3g that i type into the iPhone? (i already have unlimited internet on my contract).
also, what is 3rd party software? you mentioned it in your previous post.
thanks again

To setup your new iPhone:
Go to Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network > and set your APN to internet , Username & Password to web.
3rd party software means anything that isn't designed and supported by the OS manufacturer. If you're new, this means most of the apps on the App Store, but I think Adam was primarily referring to 'jailbroken' communities such as Cydia and Installer. I would suggest if you're completely new to the iPhone and its features, head on over to Apple.com for help.

hi also iPhone 3g user on Vodafone, much better reception! When you said you got everything working does that include visualvoicemail? I could only get traditional voicemail to work. If so how!
I would also make sure Vodafone have conference calling listed on you account, so you can use that feature

VisualVoiceMail, is not something that can made to work through a device hack. Vodafone UK would have to implement it at the network level. As they do not stock the iPhone they have no reason to implement this feature.

I have an Apple iPhone 3GS that I bought unlocked from the Apple Store in Sydney. Can you tell me what the MMS settings are for the iPhone? Also, I tried the info below for the Internet but I keep on getting a "Could not activate cellular data network" error message - do you know why this is happening?
Thanks for your help.
Regards

Hi,
"Could not activate cellular data network" could be a few things, but is most often seen if one of two factors are present:
1) After entering the APN information, you did NOT reboot. You must reboot.
2) You are not within range of 3G coverage.
You might want to take a look at this iPhone 3G/S Internet and MMS specific thread:
http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=28
On page 4 http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/index.php?show...28165
, sticks221 kindly provided an iPhone carrier settings file for contract, with instructions on how to apply on Windows, OS X instructions are towards the bottom of the page.
Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the post and welcome to the Vodafone eForum, as you can see from fluxy2's reply everyone here will do their best to help
Just click on the link thats been provided and you'll find all the information you need.
But I'll add them onto here in case you're feeling lazy
How do I configure my iPhone to browse?
The iPhone can only use the Internet connection for browsing. It’s not possible to set up the device to use the Vodafone WAP connection. To configure the internet APN:
Tap Settings > General > Network > Data Network > EDGE
In the APN field, enter: internet (for Contract customers) or pp.vodafone.co.uk (for pay as you talk customers)
In the Username field, enter: web
In the Password field, enter: web.
Then for the MMS: (settings> General> network> Cellular Data Network> scroll down to MMS
APN: internet
username : wap (also try web)
password: wap (also try web)
mmsc: http://mms.vodafone.co.uk/servlets/mms
mms proxy: 212.183.137.012
This should sort everything out for you.
Please let us know if you need anything else.
Many Thanks
MattyD

iv read on various sites that doing a sw upgrade will void the warranty?? is that true??
iphoneunlockuk told me that you just revert the handset back to stock setting and the warranty is back..i thought apple would be able to tell??

We're not really the best ground to host unlock information for a phone we don't sell, so your best bet will likely to visit other forums on the net or Google it.
