I there anyone that can guide me in sorting this please.

I have made sure the password, authentication password, host name and smtp is correct.

Re: Iphone 4 - Emails not sending

Hi Lucy,

I just replaced my normal SMTP server with yours and I get the same error message.

This leads me to believe that the problem is at AOL's end... and certainly the error message indicates that the server (i.e. smtp.aol.com) has rejected the email.

However, do you have any authentication set on the SMTP server?

Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Your account > Account > SMTP > smtp.aol.com

Is there a username and password set here? If not you should try it with your AOL username and password.

Re: Iphone 4 - Emails not sending

Actually it should be your AOL email address and password and also ensure Use SSL is enabled and Server Port is set to 587.

Might also be worth deleting and recreating the account on your phone. That would force it to use any new settings provided by AOL.

Re: Iphone 4 - Emails not sending

Hi bubba2306,

Are you getting the same error message, and what email provider are you using?

If the problemn is just affecting outgoing emails, can you post your outgoing server settings here so we can check for any obvious issues? We don't need the login details or the email address itself, so don't worry about those.

Also, have you tried an alternate outgoing server, and if so, did this have the same issue?

Dave

Re: Iphone 4 - Emails not sending

Hi everyone I'm having a similar problem. I'm using the iPhone 4 and using my freeserve email . Pop.freeserve.co.uk and smtp.freeserve.co.uk. I can send and receive emails using my wi fi, I can receive emails using 3G but cannot send - I get the same message as the original poster . It has always been this way, at first I thought I could live with it as I was still able to receive emails on 3G , however as I'm spending more and more time away from home , I'm now finding it very difficult when I cannot respond to or send emails using 3G . Please help if you can!

Re: Iphone 4 - Emails not sending

Ok Have read various message boards on apple forums and decided I had nothing to lose in trying a few suggestions. This is the one that appears to have worked . Went into email settings and turned the primary smtp server off, disabled wi fi, added another smtp server, using the same settings as the primary server ie smtp.freeserve.co.uk then under the optional I typed in my user name and my password . SSL was set to on, it wouldn't validate and asked if I wanted to try without SSL - I chose yes - voila verified. Tried sending an email to myself using 3G and success - sent and received! Enabled wi fi and sent an email to myself - success - sent and received. Looked at both sets of smtp server settings to compare if anything had changed from what was my primary server ( which would send and receive on wi fi but only receive on 3G) and the new server I had just set up. The only change is the port number . The original was set at 25 ( as instructed by website) the new server port number is 587. Can only assume that when first set up the wrong settings were downloaded that prevented receiving email on 3G . I know my problem differed from the original poster in that I have never been able to receive emails via 3G, bit I hope that the solution I have found may help others suffering the same problem Regards lightchaser

Re: Iphone 4 - Emails not sending

Hi

I just joined this forum after getting my iPhone at the weekend. I too have had terrible problems getting e-mail to send from my phone, I use my own domain and host which has it's own POP/IMAP and SMTP servers. I have spoken with my host and they tell me that it is probably a Vodafone data network issue as my settings work over WiFi. Sometimes it works fine over 3G but never on 2G, saying there was a problem with the data connection or just hanging.

In desperation I have been using my GMail account which works flawlessly. I then realised that I could in fact set my original e-mail address as an address to send FROM in my GMail account settings. This has now fixed my problem completely as I just use the smtp.gmail.com and my GMail login details.

I still have my original SMTP server settings saved as an optional outgoing server for when I'm on WiFi only.

Hope this is of any help to anyone.

Re: Iphone 4 - Emails not sending

With GMail I've cured my problem, okay it's not exactly how I'd like it to be but it works for me and my e-mails get to where they're going (and replies come back to the right address!).

It's also worth noting that if you change the SMTP settings that turning the iPhone off and back on again seems to aid in getting the settings accepted. I noticed that it initially didn't work, I turned the phone off and then it just accepted them and has worked since.

So my iPhone SMTP settings are:

smtp.gmail.com

GMail Username (note this needs to be @gmail.com)

GMail Password

Port: 587

Use SSL: On

Authentication: Password

In GMail Settings (button at top-right of full desktop GMail window) go to "Accounts and Import" tab and click "Add another email address you own" next to "Send mail as:". You can then specify your preferred address and don't forget to set it as the default! You'll need to do all the verification of that address in order for GMail to accept it.

Cheers.

Re: Iphone 4 - Emails not sending

Hi there,

I am having the same issues with all the servers.

My current primary one is

smtp.aol.com - on

use SSL - on

Authentication - password

Server port - 587.

I have tried deleting the account and switching phone off then re-booting adding the aol account and doing all the things you mentioned. Did a test - no luck!

HELP ASAP

Re: Iphone 4 - Emails not sending

I'm not with AOL so I can't comment on their servers, however, this is what should work (but doesn't?):

INCOMING MAIL:

Server: imap.aol.com

Username: AOL Screen Name (bit before the @aol.com)

Password: AOL Screen Name password

Port: 993

SSL: On

Authentication: Password

OUTGOING MAIL:

Server: smtp.aol.com

Username: AOL Screen Name (bit before the @aol.com)

Password: AOL Screen Name password

Port: 587

SSL: On

Authentication: Password

I have found that you should always set your email accounts up with WiFi enabled and connected to the Internet.

I would also set up a GMail account for your e-mail. Don't set it up using your AOL account as the login name, select one like youraolscreenname@gmail.com. Then log into the FULL GMail service and click on the Settings icon either right at the top-right-hand side of page or just above the e-mail list on the right-hand side and select "EMail Settings". Then click "Accounts and Import" at the top of the settings list and the third option down is called "Send Mail As", click "Add another email address you own" then specify your AOL e-mail address in there under "Email Address:". Click "Next Step" and open your AOL email in a separate window. You will receive an e-mail with a confirmation number that you have to enter in on the GMail window. Log out of your GMail account.

You will also receive another e-mail asking you to verify the account, do so and re-log in to your GMail account. Go back to the Settings and then "EMail Settings", verify your new address is present and click "Make Default" (after it on the same line) to set it as the default address for GMail to send as.

Back on the iPhone. Ensure you are connect to the Internet via WiFi and that all apps have been quit properly (double press the front button to see running apps at the bottom of the screen, press and hold on the first icon until these apps start shaking and press the red circle in the top right of each icon). It is imperative that the Settings and Mail apps are NOT running at this point.

Go into Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Your AOL Account -> SMTP -> Add Server...

Host Name: smtp.gmail.com

User Name: Your GMail EMail Address

Password: Your GMail EMail Password

Use SSL: On

Authentication: Password

Press Done. The account should now be verified.

Ensure that the new SMTP server is ON. Turn OFF any other SMTP servers. It is important that all other SMTP servers have been turned off on this account at this point. It doesn't matter if the new SMTP server is not the primary for the account as long as the primary and all others are off.

Press Done and Back to go back to the main settings screen. Quit Settings properly (double press the front button to see running apps at the bottom of the screen, press and hold on the first icon until these apps start shaking and press the red circle in the top right of each icon). It is imperative that the Settings and Mail apps are NOT running at this point.

Now turn your iPhone off completely (holding the top button for a couple of seconds until you get the Turn Off slider). Give it a couple of seconds and turn the iPhone back on. Go back into Settings and verify everything is correct and also turn OFF WiFi. Now open the Mail app and try sending a test message to yourself. I have noticed on 2G this can take about 30 seconds or more and on 3G its fairly instant. To see the progress of your send drop back to the Mail account selection screen and there should be a status box at the bottom of the window.

If you just have "Sending" with a circular animation below it something is wrong, if you have "Sending" with a white progess bar then it IS working but it's taking it's time.

I have also found that I get "Data Network Timeout" and "Data Network Failed" error messages -- VODAFONE WHAT DOES THIS MEAN???

I have tried many combinations of SMTP servers and this is the only method I have got to work reliably over the Data Network (all work over WiFi).

I would say that I am NOT an expert on email, Vodafone or iPhone. What I have documented above and in previous posts are my own opinions and findings which are accurate to the best of my knowledge.

Re: Iphone 4 - Emails not sending

Hi rarneil

You’ll need to setup a Gmail account and use their outgoing mail server (As its an open server) as your outgoing mail server for your AOL account.

Use the guide that pjohnson has written above as this explains what you need to do.

Once this is setup everything should work fine.

Thanks

Wayne
