SMS sent - reply defaults to iMessage

Whenever I send a text to another iPhone the reply is in the form of an iMessage.

Because I have a low data limit and usually have it switched off, I am not getting these replies because they are not coming through the mobile network.

This never used to happen. I had to reset my phone recently for another issue so it appears that this is a setting somewhere.

On Vodafones advice I have also tried a new sim and also reset the carrier. Neither have worked.

Have you turned off iMessage in settings?

Getting Apple to let go of iMessage can be quite difficult but the first step is to turn the service off.

Thanks for the quick reply Jeff. It was on, now it's off and I'll try that and update tomorrow. I'm pretty sure (but not positive) I've tried this before. If it doesn't work what's the next step? Presumably contacting Apple to say what?
