hi, 

i have recently upgraded to iphone 4s and would like to pass my 3gs onto my mum who is on a different network. Can somebody tell me what is involved with doing this? do i need to put my old simcard into my old phone and what else i need to do?

Hey there

If you got your iPhone 3gs in contract - you can request it be unlocked online here

It can take a few days to do, and once it is done, you will just need to sync your iPhone with iTunes and you will receive a message that your phone as been unlocked.

I would recommend keeping your SIM card in the 3gs as the phone does need to be active on Vodafone's network in order for the unlock code to be processed.  Alternatively, you could always use a VF Pay As You Go SIM in the 3gs - just make a few calls and send a few texts to make sure the phone's IMEI number shows up on the network.

Once the phone is unlocked and you connect it to your iTunes, you will get a message that the phone is now unlocked and that you should insert a SIM card from another network to complete the unlocking process.

It can take a little while before the phone is unlocked as VF have to send the unlock request off to Apple to action.

No. You need to put the sim card from another network in the phone to compete the unlocking process.

Jeffkinn - I might have it wrong, but I thought you had to have a VF SIM card in the phone when requesting the unlocking so that the IMEI number shows on the VF network??
