Unlocked iPhone 3G NO SERVICE

Hi,

I purchased and unlocked a o2 iphone 3g which was locked to o2 and has been successfully unlocked by o2 for other networks I tried with other carriers and did not have any problems.

(The activation and unlock message came up in iTunes)

The phone does not complain about the SIM card I just cannot get a reception on the calls(no service or no signal bars), internet(wap) is fine I am not living in a 3g area so cannot check 3g.

Phone facts:

Done rebooting, restoring, I am on the latest firmwware, NOT jailbroken everything standard and not messed around with.

Before I purchased the phone I called customer servicee to make sure that my contract works with the phone and that I won't have a problem using it.

Well now I have an unlocked iPhone which does not work :smileysad:

Any ideas?

Re: Unlocked iPhone 3G NO SERVICE

If you can use the internet (GPRS, not wap) then you do have a signal.

Have you tried putting the original o2 SIM card in and connecting to iTunes then reverting back to VF's sim and reconnecting? Chances are that although you got the message on iTunes the bootloader wasn't updated properly/at all.

Re: Unlocked iPhone 3G NO SERVICE

Hi boardmanmtb,

firstly thanks for helping. Secondly, I just tried it and no changes. :smileysad:

The "About" menu in the iphone reads reads:

Network: Vodafane UK

Version: 4.2.1(8C148)

Carrier: vodafone UK 9.0

Modem Firmware: 05.15.04

Dont know if that helps...

Re: Unlocked iPhone 3G NO SERVICE

Lucy1978 - If it looses its signal everynow any again chances are it legitimately has lost signal, especially if it comes back pretty quick. Has it happened in the last 24hr and if so whats the post code of where you were so the mods can check the signal conditions in your area?

Tom161 - Yes that does all help and is as you'd expect on a fully up-to-date iPhone 3G. After you connected it to iTunes the 1st time with VF sim card did you restore it then? If so did you set it up as new or from a backup?

Re: Unlocked iPhone 3G NO SERVICE

No did not restore it, as I thought it is supposed to be working by just swapping it. Did all that after updating as well. So it was a clean phone without anything on it.

Could it be that the sim is not supported?

Re: Unlocked iPhone 3G NO SERVICE

I also did the apple field test: *#3001#12345#

The signal strength says -113 with the vodafone sim installed.

[ Edited ]

The SIM is definately supported but I guess there could be an error on the SIM. If you get a chance pop in to a vodafone store and get them to swap it.

-113 is very low signal but still indicates a signal is present. the average is around -50db and the closer to 0 the better. I have -37 at work today.

What are the results when you dial *#105#?

It may mean nothing to read but here is mine:

If you DO get a simular responce then try roaming off the network and back on

Settings > Carrier > select another network and wait 2-3 mins.

Reboot the phone then roam back to Vodafone UK (not automatic)

If it is a fairly old sim card then it may be worthwhile either going into a Vodafone shop or ringing CS and asking then for a 'Usim' which are more efficient in iPhones.

Re: Unlocked iPhone 3G NO SERVICE

Hi Kids,

might be a silly question, but is the usim on the back (where the chip is) round? and the normal sim is kind of square?

If yes then I am on a normal sim and usim could maybe do the trick. Will call them and see what they say.

Cheers for helping and I will let you know as soon as I have checked it :smileyhappy:

Thanks as well to Boardmanmtb for helping too narrow the problem down.

Re: Unlocked iPhone 3G NO SERVICE

No problem. The USIM won't make a difference in the UK as only Orange/O2 and 3's networks require it.

The USIM's benefits:
Increased storage capacity (128 kilobytes of storage vs 32 kilobytes).
More reliable for 3G international roaming (other networks may not provide full support for 3G on a standard 2G SIM).
Better security
Extra fields on the address book (for example e-mail addresses).

You can read about that here http://bit.ly/ebrLFq and here http://bit.ly/ebxBMj

Still should go get another SIM
