My new 4S is due to arrive tomorrow and I pland to sell my old 3GS, I requested it to be unlocked some time ago but this never happened - will it now be too late once I have swapped my number over to my new phone?

Only ask as it will be worth more unlocked!

As long as you are the original owner of the phone then there will not be a problem in getting it unlocked.
