Tomorrow i'm going to New york for 5 days, I was just wondering about using the internet over there, can I still connect to wi-fi for free in America (it's included in my contract in the uk)? Also the man in the Vodafone shop said I had to turn data roaming ON but my iphone is telling me to turn it off when travelling to avoid charges, could someone please clear this up? also how can I make sure my phone won't lock itself whilst i'm in America? and lastly is it true that iphones are constantly updating themselves using the internet, so it will be unavoidable to come back home to a huge bill from vodafone? Any help would be much appriecated!

If you turn data roaming 'Off' you will not incur any data charges. Leaving it on you will need a second mortgage on your return!
As you say wifi is free unless you log onto a wifi point that asks you for a fee to use it, in the USA you will not have any problem in finding free wifi.
Some phone apps do constanly update themselves but if you have Data roaming off then they can only update when you are connected to wifi.
The phone will not lock itself to anything other than anything that is alreay locked to (Vodafone ) if it is an officially unlocked phone it will always stay unlocked.
If it is locked to Vodafone the calls you make will be charged at Vodafones roaming rates which may be expensive, if it is unlocked you can stick a local sim it it. To ensure you do not get hit with roaming charges (unless you are happy with that) then also turn off Cellular Data, or put the phone in airplane mode and then turn wifi back on.

Although u should sign up to Vodafone passport for free by calling 5555 from ur handset they will be able to help
Vodafone Passport charges are here: http://www.vodafone.co.uk/personal/price-plans/man
Sign-up is free, the calls made using Passport are not.

Yes. If the phone was supplied to you by Vodafone it is locked to their network. so any calls you make will be charged at roaming rates.
You can ask for it to be unlocked by filling in this form: http://campaigns.vodafone.co.uk/UnlockCodeRequestF
orm/ but that will not be of any help to you until you return home.

okay thanks, I wasn't planning on making on calls I was more relying on social networking to communicate with others, hence why I was asking about internet usage and wi-fi
