iMessage is supposed to be free

According to Apple, the use of iMessage should be free anywhere in the world as it uses the internet rather than the phone carrier to send the message. However Vodafone has been charging me £0.24p VAT incl for every text that I make to my friend in the U.S. He is not charged by his carrier for any iMessage sent. Does anyone know a way around this charge? So far the only way I can avoid this is to go to airplane mode, WiFi on and then send a message. But that's a pain and you must be in a WiFi environment.
Thanks

iMessage is free when connected via the Internet i.e. wifi, mobile data but you still pay for that either with your mobile or broadband provider anyway). I gave up with it... We had 4 devices but only one apple ID set up...nothing was a secret in my house 😊

iMessage is free, you are being charged for sending an international SMS.
If when you send the message your friend does not have iMessage turned on or is not connected to the Internet your message is sent as a standard SMS. You can identify if it was sent as an iMessages as they are always sent in a blue bubble. If it is sent in green it is a standard SMS.
To avoid the messages being sent as standard SMS's go into;
Settings > Messages > and then make sure that 'Send as SMS is toggled to off. If your friend is not connected to iMessage at the time the message will still send as an iMessage and it will be delivered when your friend reconnects.

iMessage itself is free in the same way that Blackberry messenger is free. However, it does use data from your data allowance as it uses the internet.
if you don't have a data package, or have gone over your limit, it isn't free.

If you are connected to wifi then iMessage is free and does not use any of your data allowance. If you are using cellular (mobile) data then it does use that data although a mimimal amount.
