As the update adds no benefits or functionality I'd strongly recommend waiting to see if this is a widespread issue so that, if so, you can wait for a fix/support.
Of course it's possible that this is an isolated incident but I thought it was best to forewarn people so they don't experience the same anxious situation I'm now in.

I have no idea what caused all the various errors and recoveries along the way, but I'm relieved not to have lost my data. Really gave me a fright as it was my first iPhone update and my friend bricked her 3GS last week upgrading to iOS 4 which needed a trip to an Apple Store to resolve.
I don't think I'll be as hasty to install updates in future!

UPDATE: After a few attempts I've managed to get the phone restored and it is running iOS 4.0.1 now. The only noticeable difference is the first two bars are slightly taller. Can't comment on the signal calculation issue as I have Sure Signal and it's always five bars.

I installed the update and everything went in without a hitch, however after the phone had restarted, itunes would not connect to the phone, kept coming up with an error saying "itunes could not connect to this iphone...." restarted the phone a couple of times, no good, however after restarting windows, all was good again and both itunes and phone are doing well.

Looks like the issue was Windows

Just joined up to the forum. Recently upgraded to the iPhone 4 from my iPhone 3G and been experiencing the dibilatating signal issues that everyone seems to be experiencing with the new phone. I cannot get a consistent 3G signal with the new phone, when I could with the old iPhone 3G. Also, the "grip of death" issue seems very real (replicated through unscientific testing).
I had high hopes last night with the issue of 4.0.1. No problems upgrading (but I am running a Mac on OS X), seemed to go smoothly enough; but no real change in signal strength. 3G is still elusive and variable.
I will wait to hear what Apple have to say about the issue tonight. Here's hoping that a fix is forthcoming...and soon

Hi All,

Likewise. I updated, but my problems still remain. This is no surprise, the update is only supposed to alter the graphic. 3G still painfully slow to the point where iphone is unusable, the only difference is that now i generally have 3 or 4 bars rather than 4 or 5....great.

Updated fine on my iPhone. Just look at those pretty tall barsWait, that's all they changed????
Seriously, I was hoping for a modem firmware update, at least...
yep, 579mb for that??!! Waste of time....
I'm not blaming VF anymore. The fault lays with Apple. i should have learnt my lesson with the 3G, got it when it was first released and had 2/3 months of frustration about lack of battery life and modem resetting avery 20 seconds. I had many visits to the genius bar, only to be told "its new, it has problems, we'll fix them". Never buy an apple product at launch, always wait 6 months.

The update to 3.1.3 was meant to be to stop people jailbreaking their phones with blackrain.... yeah how long did that last for..
Most of apples time is spent learning different ways to generate coding so they can keep the monopoly..
What bemuses me is Microsoft were sued a hefty amount for preinstalling Internet Explorer... despite the customer being able to go and download additional browsers... using.. guess what... IE (to actually browse to google to type in firefox.. etc)... yet... apple pre loads their safari with no option... odd eh?.. monoppppoooollllyyyyyy
