Hi, I just had my new iPad (3rd Gen) delivered today and I noticed there's no option for me to enable personal hotspot. Any suggestions ?

The new iPad does have the feature but its wether or not vodafone supports it.

If you look about halfway down this link http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/ it says the following:

iPad as a personal hotspot.

Now for the first time, you can share the high-speed data connection on your iPad. If your carrier supports it, iPad can act as a personal hotspot for connecting up to five devices — such as a MacBook Air, an iPod touch, or another iPad — over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB.

How to enable im not sure yet as mine hasn't arrived but check it out.

Well Vodafone? Do you support this? As with my first post, is this availble for the NEW IPad (3) or just the iphone 4/4S?

Surely if its on the the iphone 4 it should be supported for the NEW ipad?

Is it coming soon?

Hi Dave, The option is not there on the new iPad and the carrier needs to activate it. I called 191 on Sunday and they said they had enabled it but nothing yet!!!! :-(

I asked the same question few days ago. Maybe this device is quiet new and Vodafone is not aware of this issue?

David .. There's no option to enable personal hotspot on the iPad 2 and iPad 3rd gen. Both my devices are running iOS 5.1 at the moment. Maybe carrier update is required ?

It would seem the problem lies with apple themselves!

The Personal Hotspot feature is supposed to be part of the iOS 5.1 firmware release for the new iPad. Apple clearly details what it is and how to use it on page 123 of the new iPad user manual (PDF). However, it does also use the phrase:

Share an Internet connection: Go to Settings > General > Network and tap Set Up Personal Hotspot — if it appears — to set up the service with your carrier.

It would also seem no New iPad has the feature no matter which carrier you are with..

So I can only guess that Apple are the ones that need to enable this in an update of some sort.

There's a thread on Apple forum regarding to this issue. Apparently Apple and Vodafone have to work together to push out a new carrier settings. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3814404?start=0&tstart=0

Hi Guys,

Unfortunately we don’t have the new iPad in the office to test however, we have looked at an iPad 2 on IOS 5.1 and there isn’t any option to activate this.

Unfortunately we don’t have any way to add this function as it is something that is built into the IOS.

Suspect this is the answer and Voda will need to push out a new carrier settings file.

Only the new iPad supports personal hotspot btw.

I have spent almost 2 hours on teh phone to Vodafone today and have been passed from pillar to post.

I have been assured that tethering IS part of my package (I asked before ordering).

I have been told it does not need to be enabled it is there for everyone.

I have been told it needs to be enabled and they have doen so for me.

I have been told it may be optional.

I have been told it is not available on Vodafone.

I have been told all of teh above in different ways at different times over the past 48 hours.

I am now trying to return my iPad as the only reason I went Vodafone was for the tethering with International data plan.

This SUCKS big time.

@Robster2007, None of UK networks are supporting iPad tethering at the moment. It have to be enabled via next carrier settings update.

I REALLY need someone in Vodafone to give me an answer.

Yesterday I spent 3 hours, literally three hours on teh telephone to Vodafone accounts and support trying to resolve the Personal Hotspot issue with my new iPad 3.

During this time I was passed between no less than 8 people and had the following answers tot he question "I was told Vodafone would support Personal Hotspot/tethering on my new iPad and contract"

The answers were:-

Personal hotspot is supported, is not supported, needs enabling, is enabled, is not support at all, is not supported on my contract only and a few other variations that have left me frankly confused, frustrated and fed up.

This is  abrand new iPad, on a brand new £43 per month business contract and NO-ONE at Vodafone seems to be able to give me a straight answer!

I bought from Vodafone because of the specific contract that gave me UK and European data buit in, frankly, I could get more data and cheaper contract and iPad purchase from Three but I chose Vodafone because I was told it woudl be supported.

Now I seem to be being treated in a very unprofesional manner.

Can ANYONE help please?

Or do I need to return my iPad and shop elsewhere?

I do not have a problem with this, if only:-

A. Someone at Vodafone had told me and more importantly

B. That it WILL be supported under my specific contract?

I ask because even though I am on a £43 per month tarrif I was told it is the only tarrif that will NOT have Personal Hotspot!!!!!

I am really miffed at this point with VF.

But ifyou buy it from any other network you'll still not have access till the carrier updaate is available
