I have recently bought an unlocked iphone 3GS and loaded it with a Vodaphone mobile internet and wifi sim only card. The problem is that although everything works, calls, txts and home connected wifi, as soon as you are out of range of the house wifi we get the message "Could not activate mobile data network as you are not subscribed to a mobile data service". Anyone else had this problem - if so how did you solve it?

ie near house or not can you access safari, app store etc ok?

When you are out of range of your home wifi are you getting a 3g or 'E' signal or only 2g. Also the wifi networks you are trying to connect to away from the house, are these secure networks for which you need the password or open free ones such as Mcdonalds and Costa coffee have?

Yes when we are away from the house the phone does show 3g or E network availability.

Ah, in that case it cant't be what I was thinking.

Have you tried to reboot the phone? ie Hold down both the sleep and home button (ignore the slider at the bottom) until the Apple logo appear, then release the buttons, the phone will close down and then reboot of its own accord (maybe up to 2 mins). Does that solve your problem?

Settings
General
Network
Mobile Data Network

....and list all of the settings you have in there. This will allow us to see whats right and whats wrong within the settings for the data network connection.

....and list all of the settings you have in there. This will allow us to see whats right and whats wrong within the settings for the data network connection.

APN: prepay.tesco-mobile.com
Username: tescowap
Password: password

This looks wrong because it is clearly pointing to the tesco service and not the vodaphone one.

Hi there ihate02,

Those settings are definitely incorrect.

What you need to do is to connect the handset to iTunes with your Vodafone SIM inserted and iTunes should automatically update those carrier settings with the correct Vodafone ones.

The phone gets connected to iTunes quite regularly, yesterday being the last time and it appears to sync OK.

Do I need to force an update by doing anything special in iTunes?

That appears to have done the trick - we changed the settings and after a short while we were able to gain access.
