iPhone 4S Sim Card - No Number

Just received my new iPhone 4S - and I can't use it!
The mobile shows 'No Service' and the Settings>iPhone> My number shows 'UNKNOWN'.
Google searches suggest that I should be able to edit this and put my number in... but it's disabled, which is clearly not correct.
There's a siggestion that if I take this to an Apple shop [nearest one is 20 miles away), I can use an iPhone 4 to set this up... What!!!!
Calling Vodaphone 'service' this morning (Saturday). suggests I ring back Monday as they're closed.... What!!!!
I thought Vodafone was an International company! ... That's not 'service'. Not impressed.
Anyone got any idea how I can get this expensive 'Not fit for purpose' mobile working?
Solved! See solution

For those who are looking at this: Just called the support at Vodafone [they apparentl;y do work during the week...).
and I'm told that the micro sim card needed to be activated.
Whilst this is entirely logical... I didn't see anything in the documentation that suggested that this was part of the process.
I'm advised that this might take up to 24 hours [network propagation, I guess], so I'll report back if this actually does as suggested.
