Hi
I am a complete novice when it comes to apple but need some guidance.
I have requested the previouse owner of a free upgrade iphone 4 to apply fo it to be unlocked. When the confirmation email arrives i believe you have to connect to itunes with a non vodafone sim. Is this by connection to a pc with itunes installed and do you have to create an account with itunes. If someone could give me a step by step guide it would be much appreciated.
thanks

The simplest way is through iTunes and a PC/ Mac and you need an Apple ID to use iTunes so just create an Apple ID. You will need iTunes to make regular backups on your PC unless you want to rely solely on iCloud

After the confirmation email arrives it can take up to 5 days for Apple to process the unlock.

Connect your phone to iTunes with a non-Vodafone sim installed and if the unlock is complete you will get a window pop-up in iTunes congratulating you on your phone being unlocked.

You can also unlock it thru iCloud for which you also need an Apple ID, but a number of people have experienced difficulties in doing it thru iCloud so the iTunes/PC method is still the most reliable.

Re: iphone 4 unlock

Hi,

Could you please give me a hand. I asked in Portuguese (Faro) office of Vodafone if I will be able to use IPhone 4GS I want to buy from them (without a contract, just Pay and Go) with other providers and they said "no, only Vodafone". Does this mean I won't be able to unlock it using your unlocking service if I buy IPhone from them?

Thank you!

Re: iphone 4 unlock

Vodafone UK are only able to unlock handsets that they provide.
Both Contract and Pay and Go can be unlocked (it costs £20 to unlock pay and go)

If you ask in Portugal again, and say that you travel a lot, and would like to use local sim cards for the countries that you visit, would they be able to unlock it so that you can use another country vodafone sim, hopefully they will say yes.

If not then you could buy a unlocked handset directly from apple and use any sim in it.

Re: iphone 4 unlock

Hi,

I have just bought my father in law's iphone 4 off him as he has upgraded to a 4s.  I want to unlock it so I can use my o2 PAYG sim with it.  If I get him to fill the online form in to request it to be unlocked will he or I get charged and what happens to his account as he has a new phone (I've never been on contract so don't know about these things!) and has the same number (which I notice you have to fill in the handset phone number that was used with it).  Also, I've seen people asking questions with regards to does the phone need a sim card in while vodafone and apple are unlocking it, and people have suggested putting a vodafone PAYG in, surely it wouldn't need a sim card in as you just have to put a non VF sim in when plugging it into itunes?

How do you know when it has been done and you can plug in to itunes also?

Many thanks!

and what happens to his account as he has a new phone -nothing will happen to his account it will remain exactly as it is now, changing phones does not affect it.

and has the same number (which I notice you have to fill in the handset phone number that was used with it). The number is required to validate that it is on the Vodafone network.

Also, I've seen people asking questions with regards to does the phone need a sim card in while vodafone and apple are unlocking it, and people have suggested putting a vodafone PAYG in, surely it wouldn't need a sim card in as you just have to put a non VF sim in when plugging it into itunes? As the phone has been used on Vodafone the IMEi number will appear on Vodafone database so unless it is a PAYG phone there is no need to keep a vodafone sim it.

How do you know when it has been done and you can plug in to itunes also? It takes up to seven working days from completing the NUC form to process the unlock, you only know it is done when you connect to iTunes with a non-vodafone sim and receive the message that the phone is unlocked. Wait 5 days and then try connecting to iTunes and if no success then try each day until it is unlocked.

Re: iphone 4 unlock

Hi everyone,

I got my father in law to fill the form in and send it to them on Friday 21st April and we got an automated reply with a list of phone makes and how long it takes to unlock, it didn't list Apple, so I am assuming it was categorized under "other makes".  It said something about 3 days, but was not clear what I am meant to do and whether it means 3 days until it is unlocked or 3 days until vodafone contact apple.

Anyways, I have tried plugging it into itunes with a non VF sim and it is STILL locked!! I'm getting abit annoyed as I don't know what to do, the e-mail was very vague and with no instructions or how long this is meant to take.

Please can someone help as it's been over a week now and I want to use my phone!

Thanks, Emma

Hi candydoll,

Thanks for your post here.

Basically the auto response gives the waiting times once it has been raised.

As soon as our NUC team pick your email up the will raise the request for you and send you a reference number for the request, the 3 day SLA will then begin from this point.

If you still have not had any details within a couple of days pleas let us know so we can chase this up for you.

James

If you have any comments regarding how I have handled your query today, please complete our short feedback survey.

Hi,

thanks for the reply. I don't think he got a reference number and I am having problems now trying to explain to him the situation.  He has just told me he had an email saying it couldn't be done.  I don't know why, he is going to forward it onto me.

I'm not trying to be funny but I think the whole unlock situation is rediculous, as the first time we sent the form off we put my email address down as it did not say it had to be the account holder's email, so that was rejected and took me a week to find out, and then we tried again and apparently now it can't be done!

Please can you look into this for me, my e-mail address is (removed for customer security) and I can send you the IMEI number and phone number it is registered with.

UPDATE: I recieved the copy of the e-mail my father in law had been sent from NUC regarding the phone, here it is:-

> Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2012 11:04:56 +0000
> From: nucresolutions@help.vodafone.co.uk

> Subject: Re: Unlock Code Request Form [#8877161]

> Dear Customer,

> We are unable to verify your email address with our records as it is not updated in our database. Also, the IMEI number provided by you does not match with our records and in that case we will not be able to process your request. To update these details and process the unlock request, kindly contact the Helpline by calling 191 from your mobile phone or 08700 700191 (Vodafone contract) or 08700 776655 (Vodafone Pay as you Talk) from a landline.

> Kind regards,
> Imran (surname removed for security)
> NUC Resolutions
I don't understand why they are saying this as he has put down the correct email and IMEI number, I even double checked the IMEI number! He doesn't want to keep contacting VF and is sick of all of this, same as me to be honest.  I want to know if someone can just please UNLOCK the phone as he has provided the correct information and filled 2 NUC forms in to no avail!
PLEASE HELP AS THE CUSTOMER SERVICE PHONE HELP WAS USELESS!!!

Re: iphone 4 unlock

Hi candydoll

Thanks for your post here.

We’ll be happy to take a look at this for you but we’ll need to speak to your father in law. I’ll send you a private message with information on how to contact us but you’ll need to note a time that we can call over the next few days that you’ll be with your father in law so that we can discuss this with him.

Ultimately, we cannot override what the NUC team have decided, however, we can make sure that all the information you provide matches with what is on the account.

You can find your PM inbox here

Thanks

Wayne

Re: iphone 4 unlock

Hello Could you please help me with unlocking an iPhone 4 Basically my step dad has been given a IPhone 4S because he was eligible for the upgrade (business contract), he let me have his iPhone 4, and because I am with orange (monthly contract) we have tried to unlock it. We have called vodaphone up, and they are going to give apple the phones codes and that. What is the process after that? I am Evan more eager to know because I go to boarding school, and may not have access to iTunes (Internet) to complete the process. Please could you let me know the overall process ( you put it into iTunes with the orange sim in, without, or if you enter a code in on iTunes etc. Please add most amount of detail Thanks, Dan.

If your step-dad has been told Vodafone will unlock it he may or may not receive an email telling him it is unlocked, it does not matter either way.

Once Vodafone have confirmed (as they appear to have done) that the unlock will be processed leave it for 5-7 working days then connect to iTunes with your Orange sim card in the phone. If it is unlocked you will receive a pop-up in iTunes conrgratulating you, telling you the phone is unlocked. It it is not unlocked the firs time you try then just try daily until you get the message saying it is unlocked.

After that there is nothing to do but use the phone. There is no code to enter, everything is done through Apple and iTunes.

Re: iphone 4 unlock

The seller wasn't much of a gentlemen. Did he tell you the phone was locked to Vodafone UK?

if the phone was a contract phone only the original owner can request the unlock. If it was a PAYG phone it needs a Vodafone UK PAYG sim in it with £20 credit. It also needs to be, or have recently been, active on the UK network.

it sounds like you have a tricky problem.
