My dad gave me his iphone and i have a vodafone pay as you go sim card from a few years ago and have put it in, however the will only show either no service or just one bar in the corner but i still can't use it.

Any help will be much appreciated.

If its been a while since you last used the SIM card, it would be disconnected for non use.  If you have been using the SIM card, and it is active with a top up, synchronise the phones with itunes.

Take a look at the website and go to the Vodafone Freebees page where you will be able to order a new PAYG SIM for free.
