I asked o2 to unlock 3gs, they sent me a text saying its now unlocked and to sync,,,did this and nothing itunes keeps saying there is no sim ,and now i cant activate 3gs ,,,any ideas please.

Have you inserted a Vodafone sim card in it that has itself been activated?

yes I have a pay monthly sim from my other phone

If iTunes is telling you that there is no sim rather than that the sim in not compatible with the phone it is worth going into a Vodafone store and asking for a new sim, they can also activate the sim for you.

That will rule out any fault with the hardware or software. Before that though it is also worth doing a hard reboot of the phone:

Hold the home and the on/off buttons down together until the Apple logo appears then wait for the phone to reboot itself (you will not lose any data on the phone).
