Did you disconnect the USB lead before it had restarted fully?
Just turn the phone off and start the process again.
Using Odin flash JPY
then connect to Kies and do the update.
After Kies has updated it can take upto 5 minutes for the phone to start fully.
DO NOT DISCONNECT THE PHONE!
Once the phone restarts and the Home screen is shown ONLY then disconnect the phone.
Don't worry we've all had these moments

Ok not a problem, we need to go backwards to go forwards.
It looks like your original Firmware was corrupt. May explain why Kies wouldn't update?
So Now we need to Flash JPU 2.2.1 which is a 3 file flash and also a pit file.
This will re-map the layout of the phones firmware correctly, and then the single file JPY will take properly.
This is how to load Odin
You can follow this guide HERE it's my guide to de-brand + update via Kies it has lots of pictures to follow and may help.

Yeah good shout N-dj...!
I guess we just do things automatically now? It's easy to forget when you try to explain to other people!
@Cyberwitch, Follow the process in the de-brand guide, you can't go wrong then.

not a problem shame your not on Google+ we can talk on there but
you have it do every thing soup has put in the pic
Welcome to the brown trouser club
Leave your usb lead in until the phone comes from the dead
after it boots do a factory reset then repaet the jpy install
it will work this time
now with the time were on you may find kies might offer you the 2.3.6 (it may not its kies)
