BlackBerry 9700 - Tethering Mac -- Bluetooth or USB

Hi

My computer is Mac running OS 10.6.4

I have tried connecting the computer to the internet using blackberry 9700 via USB as well as bluetooth. I go through the loop of Connecting -- Authenticating -- Disconnecting with the following error message:

"A connection could not be established to the PPP server"

The following services are set up. RIM Composite Device (for USB) and Bluetooth DUN (for bluetooth)

The configuration settings for both are:

Telephone number: *99#
account name: web
password: web

Advanced settings
Vendor: Research in Motion
Model: Blackberry IP Modem (GSM)
APN: internet.com (have also tried internet)

What am I doing wrong?

In the modem settings on the mac, look to make sure the send ppp echo packets is disabled.

Also I seem to recall weirdly mac required the APN to be input in the telephone number field. try that after checking if change to the PPP echo packet setting works.

hi vodabusiness

The PPP echo packets check box was disabled.

Inputted internet and internet.com into the telephone number field with and without the PPP echo packets box checked. Same result.

Hello makemywish and welcome to the eForum.

Please can you try connecting using *99***# hash instead?

We don't have any Mac machines available in the office via which to test this ourselves, please get back to us and we'll see if we can advise further via our technical support team.

Thanks

No luck.

I can't seem to find the PPPD.log file. Would be thankful if you could explain how to retrieve the log please.

open the console log from the Utilities folder under applications. in the window there should be a list of logs you can view, the pppd.log being one of them. clear the log, then make an attempt to connect, then when it has failed copypasta the log.

BlackBerry 9700 - Tethering Mac -- Bluetooth or USB

When you paired the Blackberry to the MAC over Bluetooth did it show you that one of the Bluetooth services that could be used was Dial up Networking?

Usually it gives a run down of the services identified on the phone that it can use.
In the Bluetootj setting of the BB, find the services available and ensure that all are checked and that dial up netwroking is ticked.

BlackBerry 9700 - Tethering Mac -- Bluetooth or USB

so there is a way to get more from pppd.log but i forget what option to set.. it may be in the dial up configuration window under advanced. I *think* its something around verbose loging. This needs to be turned on then pppd.log contents posted. If its already on then there is another option which i forget and dont have my mac to hand to look at it sadly.. i'll try when i get it back from apple ...

in the meantime, another thought,,, have you got your APN set correctly on the phone ? (options > adv options > tcp/ip )

??

BlackBerry 9700 - Tethering Mac -- Bluetooth or USB

Hi bmolyneux,

I can imagine this must be rather frustrating, I'm confident that a solution can be found though :).

I'd recommend following the setup guide in the Blackberry Technical Solution Centre. This contains all of the steps necessary to use your Blackberry as a Bluetooth modem on your Mac. Please note that the APN information may differ though, for a Vodafone connection it needs to be as follows:

APN:internet
Username:web
Password:web
Phone number: *99# or *99***1#

Give that a go and let me know how you get on :).

Re: BlackBerry 9700 - Tethering Mac -- Bluetooth or USB

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. I gave up in frustration and am coming back to tethering now. I've followed all of the instructions on the blackberry website and used the details you have provided above.

I'm still unable to connect either via usb or bluetooth.

Any further suggestions?

Ben

Re: BlackBerry 9700 - Tethering Mac -- Bluetooth or USB

Hi bmolyneux,

Thanks for your reply, I'm sorry to hear that you're still experiencing issues.

To be honest, I'm a little stumped as to why this won't work for you if you've followed the setup guide correctly. The only other suggestion I can give is to ensure you've downloaded the latest version of Blackberry Desktop Manager for your Mac. This is to ensure that the Mac is using the correct driver information.

Give that a go and let me know how you get on :smileyhappy:.

George
