BlackBerry Bold 9700 EDGE issues

Hello

I currently have the above model of phone and a few days ago experienced a complete loss of network connection and mobile internet services when connected to EDGE. The mobile internet and emails work fine when connected via GPRS and 3G but there is no service what so ever, on EDGE, even when the strength is four bars.

I have contacted vodafone direct on numerous occasions to be told a variety of different fixes to either ensure connection on EDGE or to stop my BlackBerry connecting to this service whilst retaining internet capability.

Im out of ideas.

Any help would be greately appreciated

Thanks

Hi KJLavery

Firstly I'd recommend doing a 'battery pull' i.e. removing and reinserting the battery.

If that does not help, try asking other Vodafone users in the same area to see if they are experiencing the same issues.

If they are then this would indicate a problem with the network.

If not, you'll need to see if it is your phone or SIM/account at fault.  If possible, try a different SIM in your BB, and your SIM in someone else's. Replacement SIMs and/or handset repairs can be orgainised through a Vodafone store.

See Here for network troubleshooting tips.  If you want a moderator to check for faults in your area then they will need your full postcode.

Hope that helps

Re: BlackBerry Bold 9700 EDGE issues

Hello Stefangl

Thanks for your speedy response. I checked out the fault board but there was no report in my area. My postcode is LS6 3LE, however, 3 different vodafone representatives told me there was no problem in the area. I understand that uppercase EDGE signifies a kind of 2.5G, allowing mobile internet use as well. My problem only occurs when my phone is on this conniection and i am still able to call/text.

Ive heard some rumours of vodafone being a bit 'dodgy' around my area although i have not been able to gather whether it is the same problem. Im inclined to think its a network issue as my phone is working perfectly other than the mobile internet whilst on the EDGE connection and the issue only started on sunday morning; but it is becoming a bit of a nuisance as my phone frequently changes from GPRS (working), to EDGE (not working), without noticing.

Thanks again

Re: BlackBerry Bold 9700 EDGE issues

GPRS and EDGE are both technologies used on the 2G network.  Most masts are running GPRS; some others have been upgraded to EDGE.  The advantage is that data is up to 3x faster when using EDGE.

Your handset switches between the two - sometimes it will be using a signal from a mast that only supports GPRS, other times the nearest mast will be EDGE enabled.

The fact that data does not work on your local EDGE site does sound like a fault to me - based on the fact that data is working on a different, nearby mast with GPRS, but thenfailing completely(??) when connected to the EDGE site.

It might just be that no one has reported this to Vodafone for investigation?

Re: BlackBerry Bold 9700 EDGE issues

Yeah that sounds about right to me as well, although i admit that im only new to this information myself. It was just strange when my phone is working perfectly when not connected to that particular mast as it seems. Is there any way of finding out which mast it is to report it to vodafone?

A moderator will be along shortly and will be able to look this information up from your postcode, and raise a fault if necessary.

Mast locations can be found at http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/search although the details only say whether a mast is 2G (GSM 900Mhz / 1800Mhz) or 3G (2100Mhz).

Looking at your postcode there are 2 2G sites nearby:

34574 at Leeds Tykes RUFC

3421 just to the west of you

Hi KJLavery

Thanks for your post here. I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems with this. I appreciate how frustrating this must be for you.

I have emailed a colleague of mine who works within the networks team so that he may take a closer look at the traffic surrounding Edge coverage in your area. As soon as I hear back I'll let you know :smileyhappy:

Thanks

Re: BlackBerry Bold 9700 EDGE issues

Hi KJLavery

I've just had word back from our networks team about this site.

Site 34574 appears to be working just fine at the moment.

However in this area you have access to 2 3G cells 34574-031 and 1217-021 which you should be picking up from this area.

Do you have your device set to GSM only?

Thanks

Re: BlackBerry Bold 9700 EDGE issues

Hello,

I had a blackberry curve and i was using the blackberry service (pay as you go)and there was no problem at all,

i have changed my phone to blackberry bold 9700,when i put my sim card i thought that i should contact vodafone in order to get the settings for my new phone....

then i visited them at the retail shop they have cheked my account and have told me that i should wait and then remove the battery remove the sim and it will work .....

i have done it many times but still the edge is coming small letter not capital ... i called again thy have said that maybe the problem is from the phone and not from the service...

please advise

Re: BlackBerry Bold 9700 EDGE issues

Hi alain

Welcome to the eForum :smileyvery-happy: it is always good to see new faces on here.

When you changed your SIM over from your Curve to the Bold, did you go to the setup option so that you can change the PIN information that you had set up on the Curve.

If not, the BlackBerry Server won't send anything to your Bold as it is using a different PIN number.

If you have done this, I would recommend getting the service books sent again to your phone. To do this:

Options > Advanced Options > Host Routing Table > Highlight any of the numbers, then press the BlackBerry button, then register.
