BlackBerry Bold 9900 - diverting emails away from computer

OK I'm a novice with smartphones so please bear with me.

Have just bought my first smartphone, a BlackBerry Bold 9900. Have 2 email accounts, 1 hotmail.com and 1 connected to my website.

I have added both to my BB. Both work well insomuch as email arrives promptly on the phone from both email providers.

I use hotmail.com on our computers to receive the website email too rather than logging into the website for email.

When the phone is active my website email has stopped arriving on the computers (although hotmail.com emails arrive both on the computers and the phone) but still arrives at the website provider and on the phone, so in effect the phone is taking over the reciept of website emails and not allowing the hotmail.com to forward them to the computers.

Is this the way it must be or if I want emails to go to either computers or phone I have to continually switch the phone in and out of receiving emails?

Is there a setting that will allow the forwarded website emails to arrive both via the hotmail.com service on the computer as well as the phone?

Many thanks

Hi veevee

Please could you tell me what type of email account this is and if you use a client such as outlook?

If these are POP3 accounts then these will only pull new emails, so if it has been read on the phone this will not be pulled onto your computer.

This would explain why you still receive your Hotmail emails but not the others.

Many Thanks

Hello DaveCD

I have a private (as against business) website hosted by Homestead in the USA. I believe it is a POP 3 account but am not sure. I can find out though and will come back on that.

Have been using Hotmail / Windows Live / Outlook to gather emails from this other email source, and it has worked faultlessly for quite a few years. We pull in from 3 email accounts in total.

What you are describing is exactly what is happening, what do I do about it please?

Surely the point of a mobile device is to allow me to collect emails while on the move and if required at a later date to give a fuller response or add say technical detail as in my case. The technical detail is kept on my home based computers so even if I wanted to I couldn't complete a full answer without getting to my home computers. As we are sometimes a week on the road (at specialist fairs) I bought a smart phone to maintain a basic form of email contact rather than making people wait for a reply.

Is there anything you can suggest for me as I do want to collect emails in one place only.

Many thanks

Re: BlackBerry Bold 9900 - diverting emails away from computer

Hi veevee

Thanks for your post here.

Unfortunately this is a limitation of the setup you are using. The only way to resolve this would be to go direct to your email accounts website and pick your emails up from there (if available) or have a fiddle about with the settings in outlook to ‘leave a copy of message on server’. This can be found under Accounts>Properties>Advanced.

Please give this a go and let me know how you get on. If this is still problematic for you, it may be worth getting your work emails polled by your Gmail account and then forwarded onto your phone, at least then you’ll have access to your emails even if you’ve read them on your phone. If the suggestion above doesn’t work, let me know and I’ll go through the Gmail option with you.

Thanks

Wayne

Re: BlackBerry Bold 9900 - diverting emails away from computer

Thanks Wayne

It appears that if I use IMAP then I can read emails on all devices eve if already polled to another device. The trouble is Hotmail which I use to collect all emails is only POP 3 so Hotmail is a no no. I have also read that Hotmail is about to disappear to be replaced with outlook.com, which isn't the Outlook that is used with the office software, that appears to be a paid for service for co's.

I don't have a gmail account and don't particularly want one, but are you saying that under gmail I can collect all my emails together and they can be read by different devices even if pulled from the original server once already? Therefore gmail uses the IMAP system?

I have signed up with the new outlook.com as it appears all hotmail users will have to soon anyway. It is cleaner with a few minor improvements for regular email, but no big deal unless connected into social media as far as I can see. It doesn't appear to have any facility to allow a second polling of emails though so basically very similar to hotmail in that respect.

Am I alone in needing to be able to read an email on the move and then wanting that email (polled from our website) to sit on our desktop waiting a full reply a day or two later?

Thanks for your trouble vodafone team, there has to be ananswer to this simple problem doesn't there?

Hi veevee

Thank you for your post.

This is correct.

Please could you use the method provided by BlackBerry support here and let me know how you get on, as it is the read receipts preventing the emails coming through on all devices once read.

Many Thanks
