Let my phone do the update tonight downloaded I ran a backup before I started and off it went and its now stuck on

Locked up solid nothing happened so had to pull the battery out, and hey presto a bricked BB. Completely knackered.  Thanks Vodafone. Only reason I wanted to upgrade it is 7.1 has better memory control which would mean the battery would last longer.,

Thanks for stuffing the phone, I would say phone me but erm my phone isnt working.

Have looked on the net tonight and there are lots of people across all telecomms people reporting the same thing here.

Do we get assistance on this?>

Re: BlackBerry OS 7.1 for 9860 - Bricked BB Now

I left the BB updating last night and about 4.30 this morning it started fkashing as it has done the update (2 hours when you try to install it) most of the functions on the phone didnt work Blackberry Protect internet etc.  This morning the phone is working but it has wiped out all my BBM and text messages, why doesnt Blackberry Protect back these up as well?

I would like a call from Vodafone as this is pants, the worst update I have done on my BB after being happy with it for several years.

The main change seems to be that I can turn my BB into a wireless access point, gee thanks for that!

Re: BlackBerry OS 7.1 for 9860 - Bricked BB Now

BB Protect should back-up text messages (as long as the option is checked).  BBM should be backed-up on the phone (there are back-up & restore options) as well as being linked to your BB ID (I think).

At a loss as to why you didn't make sure all your data was backed-up before doing the update.  Remember that deleting the phone's entire operating system & over-writing with a new one is not a trivial matter.  If you were doing the same thing with a PC you would, not doubt, take far more care to ensure your data is safe - and you would still have a knot in your stomach!

This is a little like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted but, for anyone updating the BB OS, I would recommend the following steps:

  • Use Desktop Manager - OTA updating may seem easier, but the phone is taking a lot on itself to wipe & restore the OS.
  • If you must use OTA, make sure that the phone is left on charge - should the battery drain part way through it's goodnight!
  • Before updating, use the phone's in-built back-up (Settings>Device Switch).  This will back-up everything on to the phone's microSD card (except third-party applications).  If you want to be 100% safe, remove the card.
  • If you have third-party apps that cannot be easily downloaded/installed, back-up using Desktop Manager instead.
  • Then do a Device Wipe (except the memory card if you've chosen not to remove).
  • The BB is now back to factory settings.
  • Now plug the phone in to the PC & perform the update (uncheck the backup/restore options as there is now no data on the phone).
  • When everything is up & running, go back to Device Switch & reload all data from the microSD card (or Desktop Manager where third-party apps are involved).

Hope this helps.

Re: BlackBerry OS 7.1 for 9860 - Bricked BB Now

Blaclberry Protect does backup txts and the option is always ticked.  You cna backup your BBM contacts but not BBM messages.

Checking on the phone now there still an option to backup BBM contacts but not BBM messages an oversight on BB perhaps?

I did do a backup before I did the upgrade, and once the upgrade starts it does another backiup then.  The issue is it seems to brick the device and when it finally finished after  many hours more than it says it will take nothing on the phone works, no internet, no Blackberry Protect and im not the only one who has found this, its about being informed of what youd doing to my BB.

I work in IT and have done BES and we use iPhones so i knowabout updating things.

Surely if the update is that bad then you should say backup your device, factory reset it do the update then pull my settings back on top then you should say that on the update and not just do a backup?

Lack of information there.

Re: BlackBerry OS 7.1 for 9860 - Bricked BB Now

Hey there madmondeoman,

Thanks for your post about updating your Torch 9860 to OS 7.1.

I did exactly this last week over the mobile internet and I haven't lost anything apart from my BBM conversations. The update took about 4 hours using this method but I did have to sign into everything again. I don't believe this is a generic issue because I believe we'd see a lot more traffic about this on the eForum.

Are you able to confirm the handset is no longer 'bricked' and that once the settings have been re-installed everything is back to how it should be?

Cheers,

Lee

So are your text messages backed-up or lost?

BBM has an option to Save Chat History (either to Device or Memory Card).  Would that do what you're looking for?

To clarify - I'm nothing to do with Vodafone.  Like many others, I'm just here trying to offer advice (instead of the work I should be doing on a Wednesday afternoon :smileyvery-happy:).

As you know, when it comes to updating any device, there are so many different configurations with settings & third-party applications.  No doubt Vodafone & RIM have tested the update to the nth degree, but I always figure that the best chance of having a hassle-free update is to revert, as close as possible, to factory settings.
