Blackberry Storm Situation Update

Out of interest; those who are "still having problems" with their Storms? Have you tried any of the so-called 'unofficial' firmware releases? I am using .173, which is an official RIM release, but not an official VF release. Since installing it I have noticed a drastic improvement in battery life. I can't say that the signal has improved as I live just across the road from a VF mast and so the signal is so strong that my Storm is almost hovering. At work there is no 3G signal but I do get a GPRS signal. It seems the .173 firmware does gives a stronger GPRS signal at work though.

I know VF will say that unofficial firmware updates will invalidate the warranty, which I fully understand, but I think that is only from a VF point of view. I cannot see how it would invalidate the manufacturers warranty as .173 is an official 9500 release from the manufacturer.

Yes I'm still having problems with it

  • failed calls
  • callers unable to hear me
  • signal dropping
  • random reboots
  • freezes up and requires battery pull.
I cannot confirm or deny that I may or may not have loaded an unofficial firmware, although my battery life is acceptable. but the above really isn't.

Still a poor signal with my second Storm, however I should be glad I have never had either Storms freeze, reboot or need a battery pull (except after a firmware upgrade).

By far the most infuriating thing for me on this phone is the signal - now you see it, now you dont. I can be sat at home with 2/3 bars signal, pick the phone up to make a call / browse the internet and it goes through the full cycle of X SOS full signal and back to SOS. Worse still is browsing waiting for a page to render only to check the home page to see that the signal you thought you had has vanished.

interestingly, I used my Storm whilst on holiday in Mexico. the signal issues are even worse there.... loading up google could take upwards of 5 minutes.

I'm on my third Storm and still having the same problems as most....signal, battery, random reboots, freezes, dropped calls etc. Although despite all the problems i do still like the phone and will definitely consider the Storm 2 if Vodafone get it...i'll wait for some thorough reviews first though!

Hi

To be honest, I would be quite apprehensive to try the Storm 2, I wouldn't want to get my hopes up and be all excited again, only to be frustrated and let down once more.

For me, as long as it has signal (and doesn't randomly turn off or drop calls), a lot of other things could be put up with for a while, knowing they should be sorted with firmware upgrades.

My main issue with the Storm was the fact that you could not reliably use it as a phone, which really, despite all the other things it has, is what it's supposed to be...

Wow this thread is really starting to be dragged out, maybe we should put some wagers on when we will hear anything, mods said couple of days so I reckon we might hear something in around 2 months time?

That is the thing, nobody knows if it is any better than the Storm 1.

Apprehensive is an understatement..... as you and countless others have said VF/RIM has basically beta tested us with this handset

I am not laying any blame at any mods on the eForum as they've had the thankless task of trying to appease us cheesed of users of this electric paperweight....

Just out of curiosity, are those who were not one of the chosen few for the trial going to be updated as well? Yes I know theres no timescales, but is it fair to be ignored after the e-mail that was sent in June?

On a side note I've just been to somewhere with no signal for a few days and didn't even notice. Guess I'm just used to the storm now ;)

I don't think we will to be honest. If, and that is a big IF, VF are going to give anybody a free update to the Storm 2, I think it will only be those who have sent their Storms for RIM to test. And I think it will be quite hush-hush.

That's right, they have successfully lowered your expectations through attrition. By the end of the contract you'll be asking whether you need a mobile phone in any case.

At this rate I'm not sure anyone is going to get an update.... oh well another dead end!!

Nice to have a glimmer of hope whilst it lasted!

I think we should stop dreaming about being given Storm 2's (which is more a nightmare really). The call was only about being given new Storm 1's as ours were now 'in pieces'. That's all - and that should have been done from day 1 anyway. Initially thought was great, until i realised i expect so little from anyone at VF that anything else sounded great!

2 days has now turned into 4................so Tom, once again you've failed miserably!

Did you get any feedback re RIM's supposed investigation into your phone problems?? or do you think your phone has been in reading for the last 3 months??

Nothing was mentioned about what was wrong with it - so i still doubt RIM even know what's going on let alone get to see them!
