Blackberry Torch 9800 - Coming to Vodafone?

I've been waiting for this for nearly 6 months. It sounds really good and is, for me, its the first real alternative to the 9000 Bold. Having read reviews etc, it sounds like it will be a real upgrade as opposed to the 9700 which really offered me little real improvement.

The Bold is the best phone I've ever owned, I think whilst ith wont kill any iphones, it is likely to be a much better telephone, if not quite as good for internet use.

Any news on when it is due out? I've heard mid Sept to early Oct

The pre-order page is here:

https://blackberry.v...ne.co.uk/torch/

Unfortunately, it doesn't work. Whatever I enter, I get the message 'Please correct following field(s):
Connection (Please complete this mandatory field)'. Seems as though it clears the 'Current network', 'usage' and 'contract type' fields and then fails to send it.

Please fix it, Vodafone, I want one of these!

I just tried it on my XP laptop instead of my Win7 desktop with exactly the same results. The only common factor is IE8 with default settings.

I'll have to give up and watch the website instead.

same for me too :(

believe me i want one real bad, especially after getting some hands on time with one yesterday :)

check my (admittedly not so great videoing skills) quick hands on here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nyTm6GQkhI

hopefully the mods dont remove the link, as its just a youtube vid.

i found no lag at all, and the screen was real nice to use (even though i am really used to my storm2 screen).

wifi media sync, and the auto focus text on browser are awesome too. the browser is amazing on this compared to the current BB offering, believe me i`ll be first in line for this phone, im due an upgrade now vodafone. hook me up :)

Blackberry Torch 9800 - Coming to Vodafone?

Things I would like to know part one:

Is the chrome bezel actually metal or is it cheap plastic that the paint rubs off of (yes, it matters to me).

What is the slide build quality like? (My Betamax Storm looks like it was slung together on a friday afternoon).

Does it have a real-time compass/gyro thing and could therefore run augmented reality apps when they are available.

I've seen some pictures, is it really that thick? Looks thicker than my betamax, is that possible?

Q. Is the chrome bezel actually metal or is it cheap plastic that the paint rubs off of (yes, it matters to me).

A. its the same metal style as the 9700, however this will still chip i guess

Q. What is the slide build quality like? (My Betamax Storm looks like it was slung together on a friday afternoon).

A. build quality was good, would say the slider moved a little when up as they all do this, but overall a well built device was the impression i got from my short time with it

Q. Does it have a real-time compass/gyro thing and could therefore run augmented reality apps when they are available.

A. dunno, we were stuck indoors, however im guessing no, due to it not being mentioned in the press release, just says "Built-in GPS and Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n)" N wifi for me is a nice touch

Q. I've seen some pictures, is it really that thick? Looks thicker than my betamax, is that possible?

A. offical figures put it at .57" which in real money is 14.6mm, compared to the storms which were both 14mm. being a slider its of no supprise its not the worlds thinnest phone, but in comparison the Palm pre which is 16.9mm and the nokia N900 which is 18mm, its a good size

full storm1+2 dimensions H:112.5 W:62.2 D:14
Bold 9700 dimensions H:109 W:60 D:14
Torch 9800 dimensions H:111 W:62 D:14.6

all dimensions are in mm and taken from RIM press releases.

how exactly have they done that? has the functionality of your storm 2 suddenly changed since their announcement of a new device? or does it work just the same as it did yesterday?

14.6mm

Cheers Daveastra dude.

Thing is, that's massive. It's heavy, it's got plastic faux metal trim. IMO it looks cheap. This is supposed to be a flagship phone and it just doesn't look it. I want super thin anodised aluminium. It's just looks like a blob. My upgrade is fast approaching, I think I'll need to see both it and the iphone 4 in the flesh before I commit.

its like 6g heavier than storm1, 1g heavier than storm2, basically no difference, and lets be realistic, this is a slider, which means you have a screen sat on top of a keyboard, hence why i compared it to other sliders rather than normal touchscreens, there is just no super thin slider out there sadly.

and it doesnt look cheap, certainly doesnt feel it either, hers a pic i took with em S2 by the side of it

what id say is just try it when it comes out, iv already got the moeny aside for one, its that plain and simple.
mind you i have a 9100 now too (yup no 9105 malarky for me :) )

Blackberry Torch 9800 - Coming to Vodafone?

Hi

Not really sure what I think about this handset, is does look a bit of a monster. I like Blackberry and from time to time go back to using my Storm 2 rather than my iPhone. I love the way email is in near real time on a Blackberry, however if they are after the iPhone market they really need to look at the storm type handset but make it thin, light and without the sure press screen. The 9700 and whatever the next version is called will sell forever because the form factor is a classic and business users just love it. Not really sure if the 9800 will sell in the same numbers and who will buy it.

Blackberry also don't really help themselves look at calendar appointments for example on a Blackberry next to an iPhone and one looks like it from the 90's. Yes I know Apple is all lipstick but it looks good. Maybe OS 6 will fix this type of stuff.
