Blackberry - Using IMAP Email Without BIS?

I'm thinking of getting my Mum onto a PAYG Blackberry, but I'm not sure if I've understood the situation with BIS correctly.
Can she use the Blackberry for receiving IMAP (or maybe POP if necessary) mails without having to subscribe to BIS? She's currently using a Sony-Ericsson which just allows you to type in the IMAP settings and set a schedule for checking - can you take this approach with a Blackberry?
If it makes any difference, I'm considering the Blackberry 8520 (yes, in pink!).
Hope this all makes sense.

Hi Nick Russell,
Darkone couldn't have been more definite - and correct - in his answer if he tried. BIS is needed to govern pretty much every aspect of connectivity on a BlackBerry.
You'll find a definition of BIS and a load of common Q+As in the help centre.
They are great handsets, so they're worth the time and weffort in picking the right one, and if emails and high-end apps are what you need in you phone, then you can't do much better than the BlackBerry range. our Upgrade specialists will even be happy to sort everything for you if you want to speak to them!
