Blackberry desktop software

I am having problems with the BB desktop software.  It all started about 2 months ago, don't know if it is linked to any updates.

When I open the desktop software I rarely get the programme to start properly.  It looks like it has opened and the screen is all there but it hangs with a "not responding" error.  I have to force a close of the programme and then restart it.  I often have to do this 5-6 times before it will work.

When it does open and I connect my BB I then most often get the "connecting" symbol in the bottom right corner all the time and it doesn't connect.  Sometimes this too causes the software to go to "not responding".

I think the simplest thing would be to uninstall and reinstall the software.  Unless anyone has any other ideas on what could fix this?

My question is, is there any danger of losing all my data if I reinstall then do a first sync with my BB.  I remember last time something like this happened I lost all my data and I don't want it to happen again.  When I tried to restore from a backup everything was there except my calendar more than 6 months in the past and I lost everything.

Any tips for me?

Do you have a large amount of media files (in My Documents, Videos, Photographs, Music, etc.)?
I remember reading somewhere that BB DM was not particularly good when it came to large media files - but that it scans these folders particularly during launch.

(Try dragging the Media Folders to a temp folder somewhere else on the C: drive, then launching DM).

On the PC running DM (latest version 6, I think), I have almost no media files and it still takes 30+ seconds to launch - it often seems to have frozen on the splashscreen.

I always found that DM 4.5 (or maybe it was 4.7) was far quicker to launch but the last time I updated the BB OS it insisted that DM was updated to latest version.
