Browser disappeared on BB 9500

In the last day or two, my browser icon has disappeared from the main screen.  I can get it if I use the menu button but that is a pain.

I am on a contract which links to my husband's main pay monthly contract so no idea if that has anything to do with my settings?

I have tried host routing table - register now.  I get the message has been sent, and confirmation email that it's been registered with wireless network.

I have been to my email account set up and resent user books for each account, get confirmation that it's been done.

I have switched phone off and on again, I have taken the battery out (up to 2 hours) and when I turn it back on and it does the 'loading bar', confirms the 'installing security updates' bit which is all exciting.  And then I go to the main screen and there's STILL no browser icon!

I've had this phone and account since April last year as hubby got an upgrade and new phone and gave me his old one whilst adding me to his account and this has NEVER happened before.

Can someone help - I think by what I've been reading that Vodafone needs to reset something....

If the browser is accessible through the menu button (I assume you mean Switch Application, by the way?) there's probably nothing wrong with the software or phone.  It sounds like just the icon (effectively a shortcut to the application) that's missing or moved.

Most likely is you've accidently hidden the icon.

On homescreen, press Menu Button > Show All Icons.

This will now show a few icons in a 'ghostly' grey rather than colour ... one of these (with any luck) is the browser.

Hover over this and press the Menu Button > Unhide Icon.

Now Menu Button & uncheck the Hide All Icons option to get back to normal.

(It's also possible that the icon has been moved in to one of the folders - but I assume you've had a bit of a look around.)

Re: Browser disappeared on BB 9500

Yes, re the menu button I can find the browser icon doing the 'switch application' function.

I double checked every folder/icon on my screen for hide/unhide and it's not there as far as I can see.  I can't manage to do the 'menu button show all icons' on the homescreen, it will only let me do that for each folder/icon?

I know about the hiding/grey out as my email folders did that after one upgrade last year - I have no idea where the browser has gone...

Sorry PSC ... I thought this was an easy one :smileywink:

Which OS are you running on the 9500?

I'm sure it will be something simple but it sounds like we need another Storm user ... all phones I have access to (OS4 Curves & OS7 Curves & Bolds) have the Menu option 'Unhide All Icons' on the homescreen (the one where all applications are shown).

I don't think there's anything Vodafone can push to you - you've resent the Service Books, etc. and the fact that the browser is working from Switch Application shows that it is working correctly. It's just that you don't have the usual way to open the browser.

Once the browser is running, do you have a menu option of Add to Home Screen? (this is on the OS7 phones)
All this does is place a shortcut (to whichever page is open at the time) on the homescreen. If you choose a small webpage (BBC, Google, etc) this will open the browser quickly but it is just a workaround.

Re: Browser disappeared on BB 9500

Hi Pau1j

Thanks for further ideas.

Re OS - not sure where to get the info easily, but if I go into Options>Apps> select 'core' it says stuff along the lines of

BB 5.0.0 system, Research in Motion

It has 'browser' in the list, when I select 'open properties' it says 'installed 25.10.10'

If I go on to open modules I can see

net_rim_apps_internal_browser_smil ..... and it says 'unavailable'

similarly a load of net_rim_bb_browser_(and then 13 extensions) also say 'unavailable' when I open them.

If I go back to core apps>browser and click the menu (switch app) button, I only get show keyboard, switch app or close.

Not sure if any of that means anything to anyone.

At least I have the browser in the switch apps option, even if it is a bit of a pain to use on a regular basis.

Re: Browser disappeared on BB 9500

Hello,

How interesting, I too have a 9500, (running OS 5.0.0.841) which is as up to date as it get for this device), it runs perfectly happily except I too noticed just the other day that I have no browser icon.

No, it's not been tucked away in the wrong folder and no, it has not been hidden - it's just not there except when I use "switch applications" and access it from there.

I wish I could offer a solution but you may take just a small amount of comfort from the fact that I don't think it is simply a case that you have done something wrong.

As the OS is fully up to date and not being upgraded for the 9500 it has not been updated for a long time so that process is not to blame.

I'm absolutely in the dark too.

Re: Browser disappeared on BB 9500

Hi Bob

Thanks for the update and I'm glad to hear it's obviously something that has nothing to do with me (or you!).  Had thought it would be nice for Vodafone tech to read this thread but so far, not even a nibble!

Probably when (if) they do, they won't know what to do either.

Just checked my 'about' section and I also have 5.0.0.841 platform 4.2.0.380 so I wonder if this problem will rectify itself when they do the next upgrade, or whether there's a way we can go back to the previous upgrade...?

We'll see what others think and if we ever hear from Vodafone Techs.

Re: Browser disappeared on BB 9500

'Curiouser & Curiouser!' cried Alice.

Checking on BB / Vodafone updates - 5.0.0.841 is the latest OS for the Storm and has been for some time. So can't blame that (or hold out a hope of an update - sorry PSC, that's as far as the Storm goes).

Bob ... do you have the same 'Unavailable' message against the Modules mentioned by PSC?

Checking in other places, there seems to be a preponderance of missing icons - generally the fixes the things you've tried already (unhide all, battery pulls, service books, hrt register, etc.).

The one thing I have come across is a Theme Reset (I'd forgotten about Themes!):

From Main Menu>Settings>Options>Theme>Select the theme from which the icon disappeared>Menu (Key on left of Trackball)>Reset Theme Defaults?>Yes

If you have any customisation on the theme (background, icons moved, etc.) this will be lost.

Have either of you tried pulling a reboot WITHOUT the sim card?
(Pull battery & sim, replace battery, reboot, wait a minute - phone will say sim missing, pull battery, replace sim & battery.)

Not sure why, but this does seem to do more than a simple battery pull & reboot.

Failing the above, the remedy seems to be a factory reset (wipe handset & restore). Given that a full restore might also be restoring the problem, you would have to be selective - so it gets quite complicated.

Re: Browser disappeared on BB 9500

Evening all and thanks for the replies.

To cover pau1j's points:

1.  Yes I do have the same "unavailable" messages as PSC

2.  Yes I have tried a "theme reset" but no, it didn't help.

3.  I have now tried a battery & SIM pull and this doesn't help either

No, I've not done a "factory reset" but as it took about 45 minutes to get it back the way I like it after the "theme reset" I'm not itching to go down that route. :smileyhappy:

Only other point to note is that under the advanced browser settings the configuration is set to "Vodafone Live" and no other options are available wheras there used to be a "Blackberry" option as well as I recall.

Re: Browser disappeared on BB 9500

Me again

Thanks Bob for the update - and I can confirm I tried the suggestions from pau1j  as Bob listed with the same result

1.  Yes I do have the same "unavailable" messages as PSC

2.  Yes I have tried a "theme reset" but no, it didn't help.

3.  I have now tried a battery & SIM pull and this doesn't help either

- well, no result!  I did not go for a full factory reset, because like Bob I didn't want the hassle of trying to change everything back to how I like it.

Thanks Techteam for the input - we are still no further forward and hope that 3 others will join us so you can actually make it official and do something about this error/problem.

And like Bob mentioned, under the advanced browser settings the configuration is set to "Vodafone Live" and no other options are available.

Neither Bob nor I have changed any settings, done any upgrades, hidden/unhidden etc so this is something which has been done remotely - either by Blackberry or by Vodafone.  It isn't a human error on our part, but hopefully we'll find a human who can fix it, sooner rather than later would be good...

Re: Browser disappeared on BB 9500

Hi bobevans and purplespottycat,

Thanks for letting us know that this didn’t work for you. That’s a shame.

We’ll be happy to get this raised for you once we have a few more examples of the same issue. Just to add to what DaveCD has already said, to anybody else having this issue, we need you to also post your firmware version so that we know the problem is with one firmware version and that you are all running the latest.

Thanks

Wayne

Re: Browser disappeared on BB 9500

Well thanks everyone.

All I can say is if you have a Storm 9500, (yeah OK I know there's not many of us left with one that still functions but I love mine to bits really), please have a quick look and see if you have a browser icon and if not please post it here so at the very least PSC and I don't spend the rest of our lives with the nagging doubt that God just has it in for us.

Ta.

bob
