Can't use wifi on blackberry 9300 without Data Services turned on

I can't seem to use wi-fi for email and browsing on my Blackberry 9300 without turning Data Services ON.  I'm subscribed to Blackberry Internet Services so this is not a problem when I'm in the UK - but when roaming, I want to switch Data Services (which I understand to be data sent/received over the mobile network) OFF in order to avoid expensive data roaming charges.  However I still expect to be able to email and browse over wifi.  This works fine with other smartphones, independently of the Mobile Network / Data Services options, however with this Blackberry 9300 it seems you need to switch Data Services ON in order for Wi-fi data transfer to function - i.e. even when you're in a wifi zone, you have to pay for the connection/data anyway??  Doesn't seem right somehow.  Am I doing something wrong?

Re: Can't use wifi on blackberry 9300 without Data Services turned on

Hi craigfisher82,

So that it don't use the data network whilst you are abroad, you can set the data connection to off whilst roaming, which will automatically kick in when you roam off our network.

If you have your WiFi turned on it will take priority over you network connection when you are in range. This will be signified by the WiFi symbol showing on the screen when you are connected in this manner. I hope this helps.

Re: Can't use wifi on blackberry 9300 without Data Services turned on

Hi Woody,

I have the same problem with the BlackBerry 9300. I want to avoid roaming data charges so for safety I turned data completely off (Data OFF & Data while roaming OFF). I tried out and noticed that you cannot use WiFi (for BBM, browser's, Whatsapp messengers) if data is turned off, even if you are connected to WiFi. Why do you need to turn data on for WiFi connection?

Awaiting your reply. Thanks.

Hi flowingmetal

WiFi is a seperate feature of the device and as long as this is enabled and you are in a WiFi area then this would work fine, you can enable the WiFi on your device by following the set-up guide on our Help Centre and I would also recommend ensuring you have the latest software on your device.

Let me know how you get on.

Many Thanks

Re: Can't use wifi on blackberry 9300 without Data Services turned on

Hi paw400

How very strange that it works in one country but not another?

I would be happy to take a look at the SIM activity for you during specific dates, I have sent an email to the address you registered with on here, once I have received your reply I will be able to investigate further, it may be that apps have updated but if the Data Roaming is switched off then this would not be possible.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Many Thanks

Can't access the internet using the free London underground wifi on Blackberry 9300

London underground is now offering free wifi until after the Games. I can connect to the free wifi with my Blackberry 9300 but I don't then get the landing page that you need to enter your email address and accept the terms and conditions before you can browse the internet. I get a message that I'm not in coverage so I'm uanble to access data services. Has anyone else with a Blackberry 9300 been able to use the free wifi in the main stations of Vitoria, Oxford Circus, Euston and Green Park over the past week? Is there possibiliy something wrong with my phone settings?

Re: Can't access the internet using the free London underground wifi on Blackberry 9300

Hi adgwn01,

To be honest it is hard to say what the issue is as the WIFI is not being supplied by us.

Do you know who the ISP for the WIFI is?

The reason I ask is that I remember their being an issue with BlackBerry’s connecting to a specific WIFI hotspot but I can’t exactly remember who the provider was off hand.

Also are you still able to connect to other WIFI hotspots OK?

James

If you have any comments regarding how I have handled your query today, please complete our short feedback survey.

The ISP provider is VirginMedia. It's free for everyone unitl the end of the Olympics.

Yes, I can connect to other wifi hotspots ok.

Re: Can't access the internet using the free London underground wifi on Blackberry 9300

The error message I receive (which I would have thought would have been the landing page for VMedia where you enter your email address and agree to their terms and conditions to then be able to use the free wifi) is 'you are currently in an area that cannot handle data communications. Please try again or contact your provider'.

Re: Can't access the internet using the free London underground wifi on Blackberry 9300

I've tried in other above ground locations - switching the network off on my device, so only wifi is working - connecting to a free wifi location successfully and I'm able to successfully surf the net on my device.

Re: Can't access the internet using the free London underground wifi on Blackberry 9300

Hi adgwn01,

Thanks for getting back to us here.

As you are able to connect to other WIFI hotspots at home and above ground it would suggest that the issue that you are having is with this particular hotspot.

Unfortunately as this is only happening with a specific hotspot you would need to contact the hotspot provider directly to see if it is a compatibility issue with your device that is causing the issue.

Re: Can't access the internet over wifi on Blackberry 9300

Hi, I cannot browse or use any data services while connected over WiFi, the message I am getting "Data Services are disabled. Go to Mobile Network to enable".  If I enable that the phone is using my data over VF, I don't want that. I want to browse on my Blackberry over WiFi.  Can you help please?

Please note my phone did work ok over WiFi about half a year ago, but I suspect there was some firmware upgrade behind scenes that broke it.

Re: Can't access the internet over wifi on Blackberry 9300

Hi bb9300,

When it comes to the data services you need to have these activated to be able to use any kind of data including those over WIFI.

If you activate the data services on your phone once you have connected to WIFI it will still use the WIFI connection until it is no longer available, at this point it will then connect via the mobile network until it is switched off again.
