Microsoft Exchange (OWA) account syncing on Blackberry with BIS not working properly

I have a Microsoft Exchange (Outlook Web Access) email account set-up on my Blackberry Bold 9700. I receive emails on my device fine (when I'm lucky enough to have a connection to the BIS), and emails get deleted from my Exchange account on my PC fine when I delete them from my handset. However, when I read or delete an email on my PC, this is not reflected by my Blackberry. I have no concerns about being able to sync organizer data or calendar events wirelessly, I just want to be able to sync emails properly.

 

In addition, when I press 'Reconcile now', nothing happens. In Email settings, under 'Synchronization Options', I have ticked the 'Deleted Items' box. 'Wireless Reconcile' is also checked. Why is my email not syncing properly ie. why are deleted items not automatically removed from my handheld and why are items not automatically marked as read?

 

My impressions from reading this: http://mycaribberry.wordpress.com/2011/03/16/microsoft-exchange-online-blackberry-sync-get-married/ are that I do not need BES to be able to do the things I want.

 

I'm running OS6, not that it should matter at all.

It would appear that what you are trying to do does not work 'out of the box'. However there are a few things you can try to get things up and running.

I have exactly the same problem! Soooo frustrating.

 

If I delete or read an email on my BB it deletes or reads on my desktop, but not the other way around. Really annoying having to go through all my emails on my BB to "read" them again!

 

Any help would be apprecaited as I'm starting to think I made the wrong decision going away from my iPhone to a BB (which are well known for their email handling!!!) so why can such a simple thing not work?!

Hi darrenrose

 

The forum link Wayne provided is interesting reading - have you tried the various checks and suggestions there, such as leaving the items in the deleted folder, clicking "reconcile now" setting the mailbox to win on conflicts, etc?

 

If you've tried all these and you're still having an issue, can you confirm which email provider(s) you’re using, whether they're POP3 or IMAP based - especially for obscure or bespoke providers - and whether or not you get different results from each?

I think I've tried just about everything going!

 

I'm using three email accounts:

 

- Work email via Microsoft Exchange and Outlook Web Access

- Personal email #1 (my own domain, registered with 123-reg.co.uk)

- Personal email #2 (Googlemail)

 

With Work & Personal #1 the email takes anything up to 20minutes to come through, yet with Google it arrives straight away. But still the reconciliation is only one-way (BB - service provider) with all three accounts.

 

There must be something I am or am not doing as this can't be right, can it? I've migrated from an iPhone to a BB thinking that BB would handle email easier than iPhone, yet at the moment I'm still carrying around my iPhone so that I can get email instantly and also access my calendar.

 

That's another thing - I don't seem to be able to get my Outlook Calendar on my BB, when I could very easily on my iPhone.

 

I'm guessing that it's because I'm accessing all of these accounts through BIS rather than BES (which my IT department at work are refusing to support because all other employee's bar two have iPhones)

 

Anyway... bit of a jumbled reply, but hope that gives a bit more info...??

This must be so annoying for you!

 

This to me sounds like either a wireless reconciliation issue or OWA settings that aren’t set correctly (quite unlikely but always a possibility)


What are your wireless reconciliation options set to?

My OWA settings are correct, as given to me by my IT dept. I thlink its a wireless reconciliation issue, settings are:

Delete on: mailbox & handheld
Wireless reconcile: on
On conflicts: mailbox wins

Same for all three accounts.

My personal email #1 is setup using imap (I presume, as it was setup "automatically" by BIS on mobileemail.vodafone.net)

Personal email #2 was setup directly on the device using the "googlemail" option in email setup (again using BIS)

Thanks for your interest in helping me to get this sorted, you're right it is very annoying and frustrating!

Thanks for your post here. I’m sorry to hear that you are still having problems with this.

 

First of all, the 15-20 minute delay in receiving your emails is completely normal. The BlackBerry polls accounts every 15 minutes to check for new emails. Where-as your Google account will push emails through to your BlackBerry whenever you receive them.

 

With regards to your other issue, I’m stumped. I’m going to hand this over to our day team to see if they can offer you some more suggestions.

Thanks also for clarifying the polling of emails. Is there anyway I can manually "force" the Blackberry to check my inbox for new messages? Quite often, someone will phone and tell me they've sent me some info on email so it's quite annoying having to wait for 15-20mins to get said email!

I've had a look into this syncing issue for you, I’ve spoken to one of our BlackBerry specialists who have advised the following regarding OWA support 

 

"Microsoft Outlook Web Access support

The integration of Microsoft® Outlook® Web Access 2003 enabled email accounts is now supported by the BlackBerry Internet Service.

Note: Email reconciliation of read and unread status for Microsoft Outlook Web Access enabled email accounts is one-way only (from BlackBerry Smartphone to Microsoft Outlook Web Access mailbox)."

 

This would explain why this isn’t working for you.

Thanks for that clarification. Well that's a bit rubbish! But I guess I'll have to live with it...!

 

Guess I'll just have to try and convince my IT Dept. to embrace BES Express!
