Phone not using available wireless network?

9720

BB 9720

OS 7.1.0 - Build 2994 (Enterprise phone)

The signal at my house is unreliable, it typically remains on GPRS although 3G can occasionally be obtained. This phone is also connected to my wireless network, however it never seems to use the wireless network for any data, certainly none of the applications I can see e.g whatsapp and browsing which can make for some very slow page loading in the browser.

When I disable the radio option the phone does not allow the wireless only connection to manage data yet I was on holiday recently with the phone (signal unobtainable) and it made use of the wireless connection with no issues and the BIS? symbol was always present.

Is the BIS symbol anything to do with the problem?

Can anyone tell me if its possible to make the phone use the wireless network instead of the unreliable Vodafone signal for data?

Thanks

Hi

Help link http://helpblog.blackberry.com/2011/10/blackberry-wi-fi-network-connect/

If your phone Connects to other sources of WiFi by elimination it may be your router somehow stopping it.

Try resetting your router.

Can you run a speed test using http://www.speedtest.net/ to check how your home broadband is performing.

Can you connect with Tablets / Computers via WiFi and surf ok.

Check your local masts regarding using Vodafone network coverage https://www.vodafone.co.uk/explore/network/uk-coverage-map/index.htm

Also use the Zoom out feature in the map to check surrounding areas for issues.

Have you tried 'forgetting the network' in the phones settings and re set up the connection by finding your router via the phone and re enter the WEP Code.

Their are other options such as the Vodafone Sure Signal a device at a cost of £100.

Hi

Thanks for the info. According to the Blackberry wifi link, the device is connected to the wireless network but without the BB services.

No issues with the Broadband on wired or other wireless devices, none are Blackberry though.

The coverage map for my post code is:

  • 2G Outdoors only wedged between indoors coverage either side.
  • 3G Outdoors and variable indoors.

Forgetting the network and reconnecting does not change the situation.

You're Welcome.

Has the blackberry ever been able to connect to your router and allow full surfing via Wifi ?

As your Blackberry can connect to other WiFi sources fine and allow normal surfing and other devices connect to your router fine their must be something between the Blackberry and your particular Router that isn't playing nice.

Which router / ISP do you use.

I would suggest using Google and perhaps look on dedicated Blackberry Forums to post their too.

Hopefully one of the other members maybe able to help further.
