Problems with emals after tethering

Hi I have recently started tethering my BB to my laptop and it seems that afterwards my phone does not work properly.  It happened for the first time on Saturday and I thought it was just a glitch, but I've just tethered for the second time tonight and again I have problems using my phone afterwards.  I can send and received texts OK and make calls, but I cannot send or receive emails on my phone any more(the message I get is Message Status:  General Failure).  I have removed the battery and the SIM and rebooted.  I have also resent the service books, so hope this will work (20 minutes seems a long time to wait).   Has anyone else had this problem and how did they fix it.

Re: Problems with emals after tethering

Hi blackberrylost,

Can you confirm if you mean that this happens after the laptop is tethered or after you have disconnected it? As you suggest you haven't found a confirmed resolution but you can identify a second case of the same issue, it suggests the former, but it pays to be sure.

If the issue happens whilst they are tethered, this may well be down to the data bandwidth being used by the laptop.

If it happens when you disconnect, does it only last for a while then resolve itself? If so then how long?

Also can you confirm the firmware version on the handset for me?

Dave

Re: Problems with emals after tethering

Hi Dave - the problem occurs after I've disconnected the phone from the laptop (by the way I've used a USB cable on both occasions for the tethering rather than bluetooth).  The first time it happened outgoing texts and incoming/outgoing emails were affected.  I took out the battery and sim, rebooted and it was fine.  The second time, texts outgoing and incoming were fine, but emails incoming and outgoing were affected.  Again I took out the battery and sim and rebooted, but this time it didn't resolve the email situation, so I had the service books resent and that seemed to work eventually.  I'm reluctant to tether again as I cannot afford to be without email on my phone.  Prior to tethering with my laptop I have connected my mobile via USB to my desktop PC quite often without any problems.   I'm not sure where to find the firmware version, but I've found Blackberry 9700 6.0 Bundle 2949 (v6.0.0.668, Platform 6.6.0.236)  Hope that means something to you - if not, can you tell me where to look please.  Thanks

Re: Problems with emals after tethering

Hi there blackberrylost,

Thanks for confirming those details.

The information you have provided is perfect, thank you!

The version you are running is the latest version available from Vodafone and I can't see this as a known issue in any of our communications.

I've had a good look around the internet and can't find anything specific to your issue, unfortunately.

Could you tell me if the problem also occurs after tethering using Bluetooth?

When you disconnect, is the BlackBerry icon still present at the top-right of your screen?

Also, have you noticed whether GPRS/3G is in upper or lower case?

Cheers,

Lee

Re: Problems with emals after tethering

Hi Lee - I'll give it a go with Bluetooth and see what happens.  Will also observe the screen and let you know.

Thanks

Re: Problems with emals after tethering

Hi Lee - I've tried lots of times to tether with Bluetooth, but it just won't work.  I keep getting a message saying "IP Moden is not supported using a Bluetooth connectin.  To run IP Model please connect your device via USB."  s, Any advice please?  The two devices do connect to eachother via Bluetooth as I have transferred files between them, but I just can't tether.  Thanks

Re: Problems with emals after tethering

Hi blackberrylost

Can you try this?

  1. Connect your BlackBerry to your computer via USB
  2. Ensure that the IP Modem option is available

a. If it is, continue reading

  1. Click IP Modem
  2. Go through initial setup steps
  3. Disconnect from USB
  4. Close Desktop Manager
  5. Go through the normal Bluetooth pairing process to pair the BlackBerry device to the computer
  6. Open Desktop Manager
  7. Click Options > Connection Options

10. Ensure that “Turn on Bluetooth support” is checked

11. Go to the drop-down menu above and select your Bluetooth-connected BlackBerry

12. Click OK

13. At this point, the main menu should show your device as connected, and the IP Modem option should be greyed out

14. Open the Windows Control Panel and open Phone and Modem

15. Click the Modems tab

16. Select the Standard Modem on COM3

a. Your COM port may be different

17. Click Properties

18. Click the Advanced tab, and select all of the text in the “Extra initialization commands:” field

19. Press CTRL+C to copy this text

20. Click Cancel

21. Select the Standard Modem over Bluetooth link

22. Click Properties

23. Click the Advanced tab

24. In the “Extra initialization commands:” field, press CTRL+V to paste the text that was previously copied

(at+cgdcont=1,”IP”,”internet”)

25. Click OK

26. Click OK

27. Click the network connection icon in the tray of the Start bar

28. Right-click the dial-up connection listed at the top

a. This will usually be named for the network provider you selected during the IP Modem setup process (i.e., “VodafoneUK”)

29. Select Properties

30. Check the box next to Modem - Standard Modem over Bluetooth link

31. Click OK

32. Click the network connection icon in the tray of the Start bar

33. Click the dial-up connection at the top

34. Click Connect

    1. You may be prompted to enter a username and password to complete the connection (web and web)

Let us know how this goes and if you have any more questions just let me know.

Thanks

Wayne

Re: Problems with emals after tethering Sounds Like I have same problem,

I have a company Blackberry 9330 that my company just gave me to replace my old 8330, which worked great until the track ball wore out. We use the tethering feature and Verizon is our carrier. What happens with the new 9339 when I disconnect from tething, it locks up the phone from the data connection. You have to pull the battery out and reboot to get it to work again.  I've spent hours working with our I.T. department and they can't figure out what is going wrong. They even sent me a replacement phone. I've tried this on two different computers, three different USB cables, Wipe and reloads, and software updates. Nothing seems to be helping.

Can some one help correct this issue?????

Re: Problems with emals after tethering Sounds Like I have same problem,

Hi - Ifinally it seems like I'm not alone on this!  As you will see, it has been suggested that I try tethering with bluetooth, rather than USB, but I can;t get that to work.  I have not yet tried the last suggestion, but will hopefully get round to it later today  I'm reluctant to try connecting via USB again as it was a nightmare getting it to work afterwards.

Re: Problems with emals after tethering Sounds Like I have same problem,

Hi fremont,

Going by the Verizon comment and your IP address, you're actually based in the US. Whilst Wayne's suggestion here might be worth trying, I'd recommend checking the necessary settings and available firmware versions with your provider as we do not have these.

If you continue to experience issues I would recommend speaking with them directly as we can only give general information to non-Vodafone UK customers.

Can you provide the following information

1. How are you trying to tether, are you using an application e.g. Desktop Manager or another method/app

2. Whats your Vendor ID. You can get this by typeing ALT+ESCR on your homescreen

Re: Problems with emals after tethering

Hi - well I tried all that and it still didn't work.  However, I've done some research and solved the problem - so here's the answer for others who may be stuck.  Look at the following weblink

http://btsc.webapps.blackberry.com/btsc/viewdocument.do?noCount=true&externalId=KB12544&sliceId=1&di...

It's instruction KB12544 fom the blackberry .com knowledge base.   Almost at the bottom of the article it QUOTES the error message I was getting "IP modem is not supported using a Bluetooth connection etc etc" and explains whyl  It also says that you can still do bluetooth tethering but you cannot do it though BB Desktop software - instead you need to use Dial Up Networking.  If you then go back up the article to the begining of Task 5, you can see how to do this.  If this does not initially work (as it didn't for me), then read the paragraph under Task 5 where it says you may need to install some Bluetooth peripheral device drivers.  Follow the steps to install the driver and then go back to try the dial up again at the begining of Task 5.  It worked for me.  ONE VERY HAPPY BUNNY!!!!!!

Re: Problems with emals after tethering Sounds Like I have same problem,

Thx, and I discussed with Verizon and Blackberry and neither have a clue. Tried 3 BB and the same problem. None of them can figure it out.
