bold 9900 - problems & possible change of phone

Hey there,

I wanted a bit of advice. I got a bold 9900 back in september , its been an ok phone up to the last couple of month. It has started to drop calls, restart randomly and in the last few weeks has been even worst as it's on but for some reason not allowing bbm and emails to come through even though the signal bar is full. Once i restart it then i get a surge of emails and bbms come through. Even the alarms is being funny and not going off sometimes aswell.

I was wandering if i sent of for repair (as should be sill under warranty as my contract is 24 month) how long would it take to come back?

I also wanted to know if I caan take it into store to get sent off for repair as I am barely ever in the house to have it re-delivered.

Furthermore,  I wanted to know if I bought a iphone 4s sim free and used my current sim (well it would have to be chnaged to an iphone 4 micro sim) would the price go up? i currently am recieving a £10 discount as I was offered a deal when i took up this contract with vodafon back in sepetember. I am currently paying £31 for a £41 contract.

could you get back to me as soon as possible.

thanks

asaad

Re: bold 9900 - problems & possible change of phone

Hi Asaad ... I'll leave others to give advice on the repair/replacement options but the bulk of your problems would likely be fixed by an OS update.
The restarts, etc. are probably the result of bugs that have crept in - maybe from third-party apps - that the BB is struggling with.  Updating the OS would 'spring clean' the phone's data.

The signal dropping has been mentioned before - particularly on early 9900s.

Check which OS you are running (press & hold ALT & SHIFT, then press H - it's the App Version) - if it's 7.0.0.xxx then suggest you use Desktop Manager to update to 7.1.0.xxx.
The update process will backup everything (it's possible that some third-party apps may be lost, so take a note of what you have installed).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. I updated my phone to 7.1 few weeks back. I shall try deleting some apps altho i dont have that many extra apps.

do you know if they found a solution for signal dropping issue?

Thanks once again :smileyhappy:. If anyone else can shed some light on the other things mentioned i would be very grateful

Hi asaadalhadad,

Typically repairs take around a week to ten days, but they can take longer, or even less time than that. You can arrange a repair over the phone or in store, at your convenience. If you have Vodafone Insurance, you can even borrow a loan phone whilst yours is away.

Regarding purchasing an iPhone, so long as you don't change your price plan (which you wouldn't need to to use the iPhone) then there'll be no change in cost. You'd be able to cut your SIM down and pop it in, or grab a MicroSIM next time you're in a Vodafone store. Once you've done that, it'll work fine.

Thanks,

Tom

To the best of my knowledge, the signal dropping was supposed to have been sorted before 7.1 (one of the later 7.0.0.xxx versions).

(Symptom was the phone would drop to SOS due to a genuine signal fall but then 'get stuck' instead of recovering the signal - remedy was to switch off/on or disable/enable Mobile Network.)

Another clean install might help.  It sounds like there's certainly a bug somewhere.  Try backing up to microSD card (Switch Device in Setup options), then Wipe Handheld (except memory card).  From here you can reinstall OS without worrying about backups, etc.  After OS install do a few battery pulls before a Restore from Memory Card.

Best of luck.

Re: bold 9900 - problems & possible change of phone

I have had this phone for a few months now and although the batter life has improved - it has started phoning random people, it constantly switches to mute when i am on a call but most of all the signal is terrible - I have had to buy an O2 payg sim for an old nokia as a backup....

Several places I have no signal on the 9900 and 5 bars on the old Nokia - my colleague has just taken his 9900 back and has a Samsung Galaxy III its amazing he always has a signal on Voda but I don't.....

No wonder RIM have posted massive losses in profit over the last quarter and huge rednundancies - unless they sort their act out quickly there will be no more blackberry which is such a shame as I have been a supporter since 2006.....
