"Built in media storage not accessible due to detected errors." Blackberry Bold 9900

Hi all

I recently upgraded to the Bold 9900 and was happy with it until I turned on the phone one day and received the below message regarding the internal memory:

"Built in media storage not accessible due to detected errors."

The handset then proceeds to ask me if I want to "repair media storage". Clicking yes yields no positive results and I am informed within about half a second that repair has failed.

When I upgraded to the phone I was impressed by the amount of memory I received internally and didn't purchase a media card as I was sure this was more than sufficient for my needs.

I am reluctant to just format the memory as everything I had was on the internal memory; pictures, videos and a significant amount of purchased music (through the Blackberry Music Store Amazon app) which I have no idea if I will get back.

I am without any memory whatsoever now due to this issue and would like to know how it can be resolved.

Please help!

Thanks,

Dan

Hi dannylucas05

With everything that you have said I would recommend doing a factory reset.

I know with the purchases from the BlackBerry App World you will be able to download these again. I'm not 100% sure if that is the case with Amazon, but you can back these up on a PC before you do this.

Re: "Built in media storage not accessible due to detected errors." Blackberry Bold 9900

Thanks for the reply.

I've only had the phone 2 weeks and we're already talking about a factory reset in order to get it working again. As a consumer this is unacceptable. It is not a valid resolution to keep losing data and just starting over every time it happens. I understand there is the Desktop Software but this isn't as user friendly as it claims to be (you can't put the music on your computer.)

I went in-store yesterday (Trafford Centre Manchester to be exact) to see the 'Tech Team' and was greeted with shrugs and a take it or leave it attitude. Worryingly, they were fully aware of the issue affecting the handset (they'd already had a 'few in this week') so in my opinion I have been knowingly sold a faulty product. Their response to my issue was, "well if it was that important to you then you should have bought a memory card." - this is disgusting customer service and unfortunately its not the first time I have experienced this with Vodafone. I have been with the network for about 8 years and everything to do with issue resolution is a struggle.

One of the phone's selling points is the fact that it comes with a significant amount of internal memory. That fact was boasted about on the product page and yet the supposedly better operating system has compromised this feature and rendered the phone useless now when it comes to trying to utilise the rest of its attributes. In fact, I was advised by the Vodafone sales team that I wouldn't need a memory card as the internal memory was sufficient!

The 'Tech Team' employee then went on to tell me that I would have to contact Blackberry myself to resolve the issue if I didn't want to lose my data which was a lie because he then told me I'd lost everything anyway! The only thing they could offer was a factory reset, which I can do myself without leaving the house. I sometimes wonder what I'm paying Vodafone for. As customers, we look to you (because we pay a premium) as people with the expertise and knowledge to help when we encouter such serious issues.

As for Blackberry, this the second time I have lost everything thanks to the handset. I had the original Storm 3 years ago and was told it was an isolated issue but lo and behold this new 9900 has failed me too, not to mention the issues I had with the 9700. I am now in the process of consulting my consumer rights to see what options are available to me before I return to the store to complain in person because quite frankly I have had reached my limit with Vodafone's wholly inadequate Customer Service.

Hi dannylucas05

It's always unfortunate to see issues with any phone as I know it is very frustrating. The phone does have enough internal memory to hold plenty of music tracks, apps etc, but it doesn't mean that the built in memory card can't have any issues. It is basically a SD card built into the phone, and there are times when this needs formatting.

I don't believe that the phone is faulty, but you can send the phone away for repair, but the repair team would reset the phone as soon as it enters the repair centre.

If you can try the factory reset and let us know how you get on, that would be fantastic.

Thanks

Surely it doesn't need formatting after only 2 weeks usage? The factory reset may very well get the internal memory card recognised again but the inconvenience is I've lost everything. I'm going to have to contact Amazon myself and just hope they let me download my tracks again as Vodafone refuse to help me on this issue.

Re: "Built in media storage not accessible due to detected errors." Blackberry Bold 9900

I have just been informed of the following by Amazon regarding MP3 downloads;

"Your Amazon MP3 purchases can only be downloaded once. We are currently unable to replace any purchased files that you delete or lose due to a system or disk error."

Therefore I will be seeking Vodafone to cover the cost of getting my music back as it is the handset that I have paid Vodafone to use that has failed to work like advertised.

I could understand if this was an 18 month old handset but it has been out of the box less than a month and your solution of a factory reset is more like a last resort than a resolution in the interest of the customer.

What are the options available to me if I wanted to change handsets to another brand? I have now lost all confidence in RIM.

Danny, as your into quoting the Amazon T&C's I bet you read this bit too:

2.4  All Sales Final; Downloading and Risk of Loss; Availability of Digital Content. All sales of Digital Content are final. We do not accept returns of Digital Content. Once you have purchased Digital Content, we encourage you to download it promptly and to make back-up copies of it.

Even without reading that, is it not common sense to make back ups of anything that you purchase?

The good thing about Amazon over its 'i' related competitor is the ability to use your purchased music on other devices by copying it over, so its in your interests to back up for more than one reason.

Memory cards, either built in or removable can go faulty, even after hours of use. There may of been a batch of them supplied to RIM and you were unfortunate enough to get one.

I would try and mount the memory as a disk drive so you can access through a PC (maybe its just the handset that cant read it) and then do a factory reset and then download the new .540 SW for the 9900 thats available officially (so wont affect warranty)

Re: "Built in media storage not accessible due to detected errors." Blackberry Bold 9900

Unfortunately this is the type of attitude I have come to expect from Vodafone. All I'm trying to do is understand why a 28 day old phone would corrupt its own memory and now there's a mentor trying to get one over on me regarding terms and conditions along with a nice sarcastic introduction, "as your into quoting the Amazon T&C's I bet you read this bit too." If this is Vodafone's idea of help then it is truly astonishing.

The line I quoted from Amazon was after a quick scan of their website in order to see where I stood regarding my data. I was trying to get my phone back to its original state as soon as possible but as usual with Vodafone and the other issues I have had, I now know this is going to be yet another long drawn out affair. I was supposed to be receiving a call 'as soon as possible' regarding my issue but that was days ago.

As the 9900 is supposed to be a smartphone, I imagined I was going to get out of the first month without it breaking. The issue actually happened as I turned the phone on because I was preparing to back it up. Unfortunately the product page doesn't list the chance of receiving a faulty memory card as a unique selling point so forgive me for believing in the product's boasts of reliability and connectivity enough that I didn't back the phone up straight away. Maybe the product page should help give the user the correct levels of paranoia needed to back up the phone before its even an hour old.
