Re: software update issues

The normal steps would be to re-boot the computer and do a battery pull on the phone. You can also try switching off any anti-virus software running on your computer to make sure that the backup file being created isn't getting into an anti virus scanning loop and hanging.

Re: software update issues

i Have had exactly the same problem. i tried updating mine last night and i got stuck at the "waiting for device to re-boot" section of the install.

had no choice but to do a battery pull, which obviously had the effect of leaving the BB Bold stuck with no OS on it at all, had to do a fresh install of the OS and then install a back up over the top of it.

For some reason the back up hasnt worked properly and has lost all the programs i have installed and even some provided by Blackberry. there is now no blackberry maps, or appworld, facebook and twitter have both disappeared.

the OS also seems to be stuck in English (US) with no other language packs installed.

there a definitely issues with this OS pack, wish i hadnt bothered now.

If you plug back in & launch DM, you should find an option to reload the OS standard applicaltions.  Things like BB Maps, Facebook, Twitter, etc. are packaged with the OS.

The Launcher application (on your PC) will give you series of checkboxes to install the various applications you're missing as well as language options.

Hope this helps.

Are you at a stage where your phone is working or is it stuck with no usable OS?

If the phone is working, I find the best way to update is not to ask the system to do too much in one go.

  • Before updating, use the phone's in-built back-up (Settings>Device Switch).  This will back-up everything on to the phone's microSD card.
  • If you want to be 100% safe, remove the card.
  • Then do a Device Wipe (except the memory card if you've chosen not to remove).
  • The BB is now back to factory settings.
  • Now plug the phone in to the PC & perform the update (uncheck the backup/restore options as there is now no data on the phone).
  • When everything is up & running, go back to Device Switch & reload all data from the microSD card.

Hope this helps.

Re: software update issues

Hi pau1j

thats the process i followed that got me to where i am now.

i will give it another go later in the week and try and roll back the OS, this one seems far from stable yet, its not like im the only one to have issues with it after all

cheers

The BB update process is something I've had trouble with in the past - it's far from the plug & play process it should be - which is why I tend to be very cautious with OS updates.  I try to run DM on a PC with as few other running processes as possible - on occasions, I've even disconnected from the router in order to turn off antivirus & firewall software.

I try to remember that deleting the phone's entire operating system & over-writing with a new one is not a trivial update.  If you were doing the same thing with a PC you would certainly have a knot in your stomach!

[ Edited ]

Another poster left his phone overnight after thinking the phone was bricked - it seems the update did take eventually.

Best of luck.

Re: software update issues

Hi deegriff,

Does leaving the handset as Pau1j suggests allow the process to complete eventually?

If this allows you to access the handset controls again but does not complete the update, then I'd suggest that you back up the device - if this at least proves possible without handing - and then try restoring factory default settings before attempting the update4 from a clean device. Don't reload the backed up data until you've done the new update.

If these two options don’t clear things for you, then I would suggest sending the handset for a warranty repair so we can check it and flash the device with the latest firmware for you.

Dave.
