Latest update to version 2.50.161.2 has broken GPS - Desire HD

HI,

I was offered a new update yesterday and installed it. Since then, the GPS does not work - it will not see satellites (when using GPS Status) nor will it turn off - even in Airplane Mode the GPS icon still flashes. Only a reboot of the phone will stop it. I have done a factory reset on the device, but this has not fixed it. Is there anyway to go back to the previous version of the software prior to the update??

Regards,

You can't roll back, even if there was an RUU of the previous version I don't think it'd work

Pity. I have been wandering around the Peak District for hours now after my upgrade this morning - GPS has definitely crashed.

Anybody worked out what was new - other than a faulty GPS?

It was meant to fix the dodgy WiFi after the previous update - bar that I think it's just bug fixes

Hi Guys,

Thanks for flagging this- we're currently looking into this with HTC and have asked them to stop distributing the update for now.

We'll update you as soon as we have more information.

Thanks,

I realise you will not know how long this will be - so can I take my phone into a shop and get it 'repaired' i.e. re-flashed to an earlier version? Also I thought this was an update pushed out by Vodafone, not HTC??

Steve

Vodafone brand the update and anyother fixes they think it needs and then when they have approved it send it back to Htc to send it out to the appropriate Devices.

Hi scouser_steve,

Funnily enough I'm just popping on this evening as our friends over at HTC have confirmed some info: You'll be able to get your handset flashed to an earlier version via our repair process, or by HTC directly.

I don't think you'll be able to get it done instantly in a Vodafone store, but the repair system is really fast anyway.

cjm1979 is right too- whilst it's customised Vodafone firmware, most of the process is undertaken by HTC- we simply give them our requirements and then test it.

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks Tom. The GPS icon in the Notifications Bar stays on permanently and when you load the Navigation App the message is 'Searching for GPS......

Look forward to this being rectified.

Same here! Bloody flashing GPS icon annoyed me so much I took the battery out and left my phone at home. Used my trusty old Nokia N70 whilst at work. With battery placed back in the icon no longer flashes until you start the GPS up....then you're stuck with it until you pull the battery out again.

So HTC you fix one major thing (wi-fi issue) and break another.:smileysad:

Wow N70. Mine is still working too! My son was using it until I got the Sensation and he somehow conned me out of my old Desire! How old is the N70 now? I must of had 6 or 7 phones since then!

The N70 was launched in 2005 i believe. Thats when Nokia were at their best I think. Apart from the N95!

Hi All,

Can you try this suggestion from XDA?

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

OK,

I'll give that a go - haven't yet passed a vodafone shop to get it repaired, but looking at this post it may not need to. I'll try it on my drive home tonight, then probably post back the results tomorrow - thanks..

Nice to see Mods using XDA to find solutions - shows they actually do take some interest in their handsets!! :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Latest update to version 2.50.161.2 has broken GPS - Desire HD

[ Edited ]

Ok, so like a lot of users here, I installed the Gingerbread update as prompted by my phone.  Since then the following issues have arisen:

1. GPS no longer works.  No fix, no satellites, nothing.

2. GPS icon won't dissappear when I turn GPS off.

3. No longer alerted to new SMS or Email except in the top bar.  No little number on the relevant icon.

I've spoken to the good people at HTC who avised me to do a factory reset which I did but no change.  I spoke to them a second time and was told to do a factory reset.  Which I did.  No change.  I'm reluctant to call them a 3rd time as I know the answer will be to either do a factory reset or return my phone for repair.

The GPS worked perfectly before and up to the Gingerbread update.  This can only be a software issue.  Looking at various forums across the web this is a very common issue with HTC users on Vodafone.

Could anybody please give me some advice to resolve these issues or could a Vodafone representative confirm that this is a known issue and that a fix will be released in the near future?  If it helps, the details of my phone are:

HTC Desire HD A9191

Android Version 2.3.3

HTC Sense Version 2.1

Baseband Version 12.54.60.25U_26.09.04.11_M2

Kernel Version 2.6.35.10-gb2564fb

htc-kernel@and18-2 #1

Build number 2.50.161.2 CL87995 release-keys

Software Number 2.50.161.2

Brower Version WebKit/533.1

Kind regards

Nick

Well I've left the GPS on for over an hour now and GPS status can't find any satellites at all. Done a reset and aGPS...still no change.

Still nothing! Tempted to root and put HTC rom on or a custom rom. I've read HTC are considering removing the locked bootloader...about time.

Re: Latest update to version 2.50.161.2 has broken GPS - Desire HD

I've heard suggestinos of putting it in root and installing another ROM, but would this not invalidate the 2 year warranty with Vodafone?  I only got my phone in December and knowing my hamfisted-ness I'd brick it.
