2.2 v 2.3 update v custom ROM

After yesterdays decision by HTC to not update the Desire to 2.3 (Gingerbread) I took the decision to root my phone (not done as yet). Now with todays little back track saying there IS an update on the way, I'm back in 3 minds again. I had the magic before the Desire and managed to root that no problem but found all the ROMS and associated gubins hard to follow. Things like Fireats Script and enabling Swap, it all got a bit much to the point where I couldn't be bothered with the effort anymore and bought a Desire.

Now here are the questions

1. Are we going to see the update on vodafone?

2. What exactly does it give you over 2.2?

3. Is the same thing going to happen as with the Magic where a lot of people phones were left pretty much useless with the 2.2 update?

4. What features will we lose?

As for the cutom ROM route, how many of you guys use them? Which are the best, most stabel etc and is there any where we can just 'flash and go' as such. I like the idea of rooting but my experience with the magic left me feeling it was a lot of effort for not a lot of gain.

Now your routed does it matter? You can put whatever you want on there now from Xda devs. Honestly your phone will be a lot better than the stock rom. Even the roms that are made to be close to stock will be alot due to the tweaks that are done. I think eFroum member EddyOs made his own on Xda which was quite good and probably the most popular 2.3 Desire non port rom is Leedroid on Xda.

I'm not rooted as yet mate. Was going to start it last night but couldn't be bothered. I'm a bit reluctant to start really as I had quite a few problems with the Magic when I did that.

Things have moved along since then i would guess. Have a look at painless root by Unrevoked and also Xda devs. On xda have a googd read of the first few stickies at the top. All instructions are in there.

Re: 2.2 v 2.3 update v custom ROM

First things first - the Desire IS getting 2.3 after a u-turn by HTC

Before doing anything can you go to Settings>About phone>Software information and post up the software version? We can then try and find an RUU for you in case you have to go back to stock for warranty purposes

HBOOT: 1.39.0000 | Recovery: Stock

Re: 2.2 v 2.3 update v custom ROM

Right, download this:

http://www.multiupload.com/K0FR1OK301

It's the full ROM file and can be used to get back to 100% stock should you ever need to send it off for warranty/sell it

Then go read the rooting thread on XDA (think there's a video in there as well to show you what to do) and then get into the world of custom ROMs!! :smileyvery-happy:

Cheers EddyOS. Will give it a bash tonight i think. Do you (or anyone reading this) know of any decent stable ROM's knocking about that you can pretty much just flash and leave?

Re: 2.2 v 2.3 update v custom ROM

Depends on the level of customisation you want. I'd recommend RCMix S if you're looking for some new Sense action (and it's pretty stable) but otherwise I can post a link to one I made.

It's based on the Desire 2.3.3 leaked ROM and has all apps available on the Market removed. Let me know if you fancy giving it a try

I removed the apps available on the Market but other than that it has all the HTC apps. I can remove some others if you wish, just let me know. Here's a link to it anyway:
