It would appear not, HTC seem to have disabled it for some reason.
Someone over at Androidforums has asked HTC the question and are awaiting an answer.
This is a major problem and one that is making me consider selling my handset and buying something else instead.

Check your internet and MMS settings...
The internet and MMS settings created automatically from the SIM card when I first got the phone didn't work. The update removed the new settings I had created. Fortunately I still had the instructions that were emailed to me. This is definitely something for everybody else to watch out for because you don't notice while you're still at home using Wi-Fi!!
It seems that not everything is covered by the default back up to SIM card feature!
This is a good point, and I found that the APN settings were reset on my own unbranded Desire also.
You'll find instructions for setting up the correct APN's in my sticky thread

I believe the paid version of choice dialer does have voice confirmations so I might try that.

I'd like an unbranded phone....like I used to have up until today.
Ahhh an unbranded Desire, Like freefall I used to have one of those, then a bunch of ###### screwed it up with a load of bloatware apps and adult links......

The generic HTC 2.2 rom is noticeably faster/smoother scrolling through menus and pages. The phone shutdown is much faster. Installing on sd card works really well. Wifi access point/tether is excellent. All in all, im now a much happier customer though, ironically I had to remove my providers software to get access to the good stuff!
I really wish there was some uninstallable 360 apps though. I've also had to add my own adult/dating websites back to my bookmarks!
