Re: Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich for Desire S and Desire HD

Hi Timmy_T,

Ice Cream Sandwich is the latest version of the Android firmware which is now available for a number of handsets.

It contains a number of updates and features not previously available, such as Face Unlock, improved email, quick SMS response to incoming calls and data usage management features.

As for whether it's any good, I'm probably best leaving that to the members of our community using ICS every day to provide their experiences. :smileyvery-happy:

Dave

If I've helped at all today, please pop me some feedback!  :smileyhappy:

How come some sites are already talking about Jelly Bean and Vodafone still can't tell us when their OWN PEOPLE will have finished so we can have ICS?

Re: Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich for Desire S and Desire HD

I just want an idea of release.

Next 3 months?

Next 6 months?

Not going to happen?

Or at least any reason for a delay, for example if HTC are slow releasing ICS for the DHD?

Re: Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich for Desire S and Desire HD

Consumer law in the UK says that the retailer/supplier (in this case Vodafone) is directly responsible to the purchaser/consumer/user for the warranty and may not refer that person to a third party (such as the manufacturer, importer or wholesaler). Of course the manufacturer may choose to support the dealer (Vodafone) and assist in the repair or replacement of the device, but that is not compulsory and Vodafone cannot "pass the buck" to HTC (or any other third party company).

There was a recent case that went through the courts where a car buyer claimed against (IIRC) VW/Audi after their car failed (engine damage) whilst under warranty and VW claimed the user had voided their warranty by having it serviced at an independent dealer who had used the wrong brand of oil...

The court found in the users' favour as it was shown that the oil was to the same or higher specification than the oil recommended by VW and that the demand that only VW dealers service the car was in breach of fair trading rules.

I would suspect that this would be similar in the case of flashing a branded HTC handset with a branded HTC ROM image. Vodafone could not claim that the HTC firmware would damage a HTC handset...Of course they may decide that the firmware would deny you access to the Vodafone network, but if the handset was provided as part of the contract, then they would, surely, have to provide a new/replacement handset to avoid being in breach of the contract.

Re: Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich for Desire S and Desire HD

The warranty wouldn't be valid as the handset was supplied, from the factory, with the Vodafone ROM on it. Changing this modifies the handset from it's original state and, as such, voids the warranty

Re: Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich for Desire S and Desire HD

The original users question was posted in march it is now nearly june and still no updates does it really take 3 months to customise an os considering most handsets are kept by a user for 24 months its becoming an extreemly slow process and frustrating the end user may have to think twice before using vodafone on my next contract.

It's a joke, a global corporation takes months to release a version that takes a few weeks by a couple of tech savvy enthusiasts to release in unofficial format, ultimately voiding your warranty . And all because voda want to load it up with useless sh!te no one wants and have to then find other ways to uninstall because Vodafone don't want you to delete it

Hi JDSkinner82, I've checked our Approved Software List and the latest for the HTC Desire S and Desire HD is currently 2.3.5 (Gingerbread). As ever, we'll post when we have news of an approved version of any future iterations. Cheers, Ben

Why is it Vodafone Austrailia are able to be transparent about their software upgrades?  http://blog.vodafone.com.au/blog/software-update-weekly-wrap-04072012/ But Vodafone UK cannot?

Vodafone -

1) are you testing an upgrade?

2) when is your projected release estimation?

3) don't pretend you know nothing about any update at all http://www.htc.com/au/help/android4faq/

We don't care if it's bad news/last week of July/Aug whenever, but that's better than no news or sheer ignorance.

Cheers.

Re: Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich for Desire S and Desire HD

[ Edited ]

There is little point in bumping this thread. Vodafone UK have shown again and again that they do not understand customer communication in any way when it relates to updates. Although I have been with Vodafone for years and will probably remain a customer for connectivity, after what they preinstalled on the this phone (and many others), and having witnessed the way they handle (or don't) the update process, I will now always buy my handsets elsewhere.

If you own this phone (as a member of my familty does) you have no option but to sit back and wait for your contract to expire and use it as a learning experience for the future - you never know, you may get an update and that is then a bonus. You could of course put CM9 on it is you really wanted good, open software...

The trouble is that people never break the cycle, they rightly moan about the way Vodafone deal with such matters, but as soon as upgrade time comes round, they take the option of locking themselves in for 2 years with another ###### handset.

Of course, I'm not bitter...:smileyfrustrated:

It is only Telus who are reporting this.

I emailed HTC and the have replied that they are still intending to update the Desire HD within the timescale originally reported

Re: Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich for Desire S and Desire HD

I'm desperately hoping this comes out soon. I have a software bug on my Desire S that Vodafone have said will only be cured by a software upgrade (I can't send MMS pictures and, to quote the Vodafone store,  have to "email them to my friends instead").

Sadly there's been no offer to help other than wait for the alleged software upgrade.

Unless this affects ALL Desire S users with the same software as you the update won't change it at all
