Android Hotspot

Hi all,

I have an HTC Desire HD. The Hotspot feature that allows the internet to be used from the phone on a laptop etc is very handy but I was wondering how this internet is charged? Does it just come out of my normal 500MB of data per month?

Many thanks,
Jack

Re: Android Hotspot

You got it. Unlike the iPhone, our tethering doesnt use a different APN so it comes straight out of our data allowance. Be careful though, 500mb isnt an awful lot on a laptop :smileywink:

Re: Android Hotspot

Yep its right from your data allowance as Vampfy mentioned. Its useful though as I've used it a fair few times but its best kept to a minimum, or just use programs to keep a tab of your data usage.

Re: Android Hotspot

Many thanks. I was told by a friend the following: ------------------ If you read your Terms&Conditions using your phone as a modem for your PC is not normally allowed. Your network will monitor the amount of data you use and look into what you are doing if the amount of data is large. Then cut you off and/or charge you if they think you've breached the Ts&Cs. There is normally a separate subscription to pay and probably a different APN to use. ------------------------ I assume this is incorrect for Vodafone as the Android's use the same normal APN? Many thanks, Jack

Re: Android Hotspot

Correct, all vodafone would see from their end is data being sent and received, they wouldn't be able to tell if it was from a laptop or from your phone.

As mentioned though 500mb really isn't muc in terms of laptop use and going over that can become rather expensive.

Re: Android Hotspot

Thanks - I have 3G Watchdog installed so I don't ramp up any high data charges.

Re: Android Hotspot

Yep keep a good eye on it. When i moved home and was waiting for my broadband putting back on i hammered a GB in no time. What you will get if you dont already know is a text message from Voda telling you that you are about to go over your monthly allowance and that you will be charged if this happens. I think its £5 for every 500MB that you use over your allowance. Everytime you are about to go over each extra 500MB you will get another text.
