Desire HD Gingerbrea d update fails - looks OK.

I recently got the Software notification for the Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) update on my Desire HD. I selected the download, and left it to run. When I came back to the phone, the battery was under 5%, and the download appeared to have paused. I have charged the phone about 5 or so times since then, but have noticed that the software version still says '2.2.1', even if I download the update by selecting it from the updates option (Menu -> Settings -> About phone -> System Software Updates).
The software seems to download and apply itself, the phone reboots, but the version remains at 2.2.1.
Does any one know if there's a way to get the Gingerbread update applied?
Thanks,

Thanks for your quick response.
I've tried getting into Recovery Mode (Power + Volume Down?) and the phone loads the HTC splash, then Vodafone splash screens bfore going back to the standard view. No menu appears. Am I doing something wrong? Also, will using recovery mode lose my data & settings, etc?
Thanks,

OK. I managed to get in to the Recovery Mode, and all I got was a red triangle with a red exclamation mark in it. So, I pressed a the up & down volume buttons and clicked the power button to get another menu with an option to apply update.zip from the SD card. I selected this, and got the HTC splash screen, and eventually a reboot.
Check the software version again, and I'm still on Android 2.2.1, software version 1.75.161.2.
Anyone else having trouble updating?

Still having trouble with this OTA update...
I've downloaded and installed update.zip via the device reset (and nearly lost my contacts, and lost all of my text messages). No luck.
I've also tried downloading via work WiFi, and home WiFi, and also via my laptop and Internet Pass-Through. All fail.
All I get (once the update comes down uncorrupted!) is a restart notification, followed by a phone and Red Question mark icon in the centre of the screen. This is followed by a roll-back and restart to Android 2.2.1.
Is someone able to help before the phone hits the wall??
Thanks.
