Desire Z

Hi there,

I've had my desire z now for about 3 months, my first android phone..... i have a couple of issues....

My phone keeps turning itself off, sometimes 2-3 times a day with plenty of charge left - genuine battery, fully charged over night. When it turns off it is impossible to restart it from the button, need to remove battery, wait, then put it back together.

Can i back up the complete phone ? like i used to with my Nokia N97.... the HTC back up is really bad, i want to be able to factory reset the phone, restore a back up and never know i've done it. When i had to do it recently it was extremely painfull and lost various items.

Can anyone help ?

Re: Desire Z

You can't backup the phone without rooting it
HTC One X (S720e)
ROM: 3.14.401.31 (JRO03C)
HBOOT: 1.39.0000 | Recovery: Stock
Radio: 5.1204.162.29 | Kernel: Stock

Hi shamusb.

Thanks for your post here.:smileyhappy:

Just as EddyOS has stated, there’s no all in one solution for backing up your Desire Z, other than the device been firstly rooted. This is something I cannot assist with, and you’ll also need to be aware that you may invalidate your warranty if you choose to take this course of action.

There are ways of backing up different aspects of the device, but this will mean using a variety of methods and some 3rd party apps to complete. The Desire Z support pages gives you an insight into option.

Let me know how you get on.

Regards

Re: Desire Z

Thanks,

The Htc back up system is rubbish. I wan't to take an image of my phone, so if i need to i can put it back on so it looks like it did before, setting and all - like the Nokia backup system, the htc one backs up very little.

I've already experienced this 1st hand, had to factory reset, had backup set up, went to install back up, sod all came back, phone looked like it had just come out of box brand new, to me hours to set it up again.

Half of me wishes i'd stuck with nokia cos of their backup system.

I can't find an idiots ( completely new to this ) guide to clockwork mod, they all talk in developer speak.

Re: Desire Z

I've sorted the 'turning off' .....

I read on another post it was to do with the gps receiver ...... turned it off ( on all the time ) and low and behold, my phone has not been switching itself off since :smileyvery-happy:

Can anyone help with rooting & backup ? tried rooting with info from another forum and using vigilante - won't root.

Re: Desire Z

There is a back up option in the market called mybackup pro. This will back up contacts, SMS, any wallpers you have set or widgets/shortcuts you've set up. This however does not back up apps. It will put the shortcut on the homescreen but the app isnt there. it needs to be installed again, which means you lose all progress on games and have to sign back into anything like ebay etc.

For rooting look here.

Before you consider rooting though, make sure you do your research. Its fairly easy but can be daunting first time.

Having done a factory reset myself over the weekend (don't go for the Gingerbread upgrade - there's not enough memory on the phone resulting in various issues) I found out that all the apps you've got listed as installed will auto-install post the reset once you open up Market Place.  As to screen sets upos - I resorted to a digital camera, and note taking for any apps I could not back up to SD card (though post reset I found a couple of those did not back up properly).

As to your problem, can't help much there as my phone was fine until I accepted the 2.3.3 upgrade.

Oh as to SMS backups - I used 'SMS Backup & Restore' from the market place - had previously used it to migrate SMSs from my old windows phone to the Desire Z (with some minor editing in between)

Re: Desire Z

My phone is working great on Gingerbread, no issues at all.

Sussed my turning off issue, doing it pre gingerbread ..... turn the gps off when not using it, not restarted since :smileyhappy:

Just full back up i need to do now, rooting my phone is very daunting ...... need to roll back firmware, install this, install that, dunno if i can be bothered now !

Re: Desire Z

I've had a HTC Desire Z for a while now but to be honest I wasn't overly keen on it but seeing as it was £20 as part of an upgrade deal I kept it as a spare.

I've now upgraded to the recently released Gingerbread OTA update and this phone is now a pretty awesome device. A lot quicker, more responsive and a joy to use.

The only slight annoyance is that one little thing appears to no longer operate as it should. To save battery life I disable the Background Data and only enable it when I use the Android Market. Now, since the update, upon enabling/disabling it the green tick in the box no longer appears/disappears upon enabling or disabling it. You have to exit back to the settings menu then go back into Accounts & Sync for it to change.

Its only a minor thing but it would be nice to know if anyone else with a Desire Z is experiencing the same issue since the update.

Thanks.

Re: Desire Z

never noticed it, but mine does the same, tis seriously minor tho compared to other phone issues i've had with other phones.

my phone will last the day, minimal calls, mostly on wireless, screen switches off after 1 min, animations off, background data on, checks for emails every 30mins. if i give the phone some stick the battery will decrease ! called vodafone, was told it's common. i have spare battery and car charger just incase.

impressed with my first android now solved switching off issue.

Re: Desire Z

Its definitely a very minor thing but nice to know its not just my phone that has the issue.

Compared to my previous Android handsets, this one has the best battery life. I always keep wifi, mobile data, email checking, bluetooth, background data, GPS all switched off and just switch them on as and when I need them.

Its surprising to see so many of the people who complain about the poor battery actually have all the features/functions enabled and still expect the battery to last for days lol
