Re: HTC Desire - "Generic Network Failure" error message

Hi MummyJanny,

I have just checked your email address and can see that you have contacted our customer service team before, due to this I have been able to check your account and can see that everything is set up correct at network level for you.

This would lead me to believe that it is a handset settings issue rathwer than a SIM/Network issue, are you able to place your SIM in a different handset to test this and confirm if it is indead a handset only issue.

Also to make sure everything is properly set up on the phone, please can you try the following settings for WAP and MMS;

1.Press the MENU key
2.Touch Settings
3.Touch Wireless & networks
4.Touch Mobile networks

15.Touch Port
16. Enter 8799, touch OK
17.Touch Username
18. Enter wap, touch OK
19.Touch Password
20. Enter wap, touch OK
21. Press the MENU key
22.Touch Save
23. Touch the circle to the right of the Vodafone WAP profile you have just created
24. Press the Home key to return to the home screen

Re: HTC Desire - "Generic Network Failure" error message

Having just got a new phone I have tried all the suggestions and none work.  Just repeating the the same mantra will not make it work.  It seems to me that your support people who are supposed to be looking at this problem either haven't got time or canot find anything but do not like to admit it.  Can they at least replicate the problem?  It seems that nothing has been heard from them.  It starts to beg the question ... do they exist?

A very disappointed user

Hi colincoles,

Trust me, james is not simply repeating the steps in the hope they work. This is one of the key factors hich can affect a phone's  functionality, so we need to make sure these are correct before proceeding.

Can you confirm the answers to george's questions on the previous page for me - the more information we have the better to resolve this.

Hi guys, here is what worked for me:

You have to fill in the field "APN type" in your internet APN settings. Value should be "default".
Same field in your MMS APN should have value "mms".
Then restart the handset.

Hope this helps.

I'm having this problem on an HTC Desire Z which I've only had for a week, and if I go to "APN type" it just says "*". I can't change it because it's all greyed out. Help! :smileysad:

Re: HTC Desire - "Generic Network Failure" error message

In reply to Dave above.   I tried all of Georges steps apart from a factory reset.

When I first turn mobile networks on then the first mms message I send gives "generic failure" on first send attempt but on automatic resend it goes.  I can then receive it ok.  A second one is sent and received without any problems.

I'm not sure if this helps with the nailing down of this problem.  I haven't done enough testing as yet to fuly determine if there is any pattern.

I will keep looking at thid thread and add any more results when and if they come.

Thsnka for your hepl

Re: HTC Desire - "Generic Network Failure" error message

Hi.

Me and the Wife have HTC Wildfire's and are getting the same problem as above. We have entered the APN info and the MMS works for 1 or 2 pic's then the Generic Network Failure is back. On our phones we can only choose 1 APN at a time. So which one do we use? All the info say's choose the one you have just made but we can only have one or the other!  I used the MMS one today and couldn't use the internet. Are the phones suppose to swap APN automatically? Vodafone have activated something on my sim's and say they are old and new ones may be a fix! Could this really be the answer? The phone's just arn't connecting when a MMS is recieved unless they are reset (battery and sim out).

Android 2.2.1

Software No 2.24.161.2

Any help would be good as at the moment we are hard resetting just to recieve MMS messages and it's a pain in the ar*e.

Re: HTC Desire - "Generic Network Failure" error message

Hi sy5gtt,

Thanks for posting. I can confirm that you should be able to send MMS and connect to the internet with just the WAP settings enabled, as long as the MMS settings are also saved on the phone as well.

I'd be interested to hear if a replacement SIM does fix this issue for you. If it doesn't, then please let us know.

Hi sy5gtt,

Thanks for posting. You'll be able to pick up a new SIM card free of charge via your Nearest Vodafone Store, you'll be able to keep the same number too :smileyhappy:.

Re: HTC Desire - "Generic Network Failure" error message

Ok so Vodafone sent 2 new sim's which we got on Saturday. I rang to activate them and ....the numbers were not put on the system when the order was placed. So, we are now waiting for 2 more to arrive. In the meantime we are now NOT getting any notifications when an MMS message has been recieved, infact were not recieving anything. My wife has has a few sent to her over the weekend and the first she knew was when we had a text asking if we had recieved them. She is about to revert back to her Nokia C3 which seems to be fine at sending and recieving MMS.

Re: HTC Desire - "Generic Network Failure" error message

An update regarding my Wildfire Generic Failure. MMS settings are in the phone as described above. Still no good. New sim cards arrived and activated today. Still no good but Service Denied instead of Generic Network. Rang Vodafone and after a quick call and turn phone off for 10 mins we are now (so far) able to send and recieve MMS. My old sim was 2 years old but it looks like this was the cause.

Thanks Vodafone.

Re: HTC Desire - "Generic Network Failure" error message

Hey leehayward,

Many thanks for your post about the generic failure message you've been getting on your handset.

Can you confirm how old your SIM card is?

It looks like a faulty, or out of date SIM card may be the cause of this issue if sy5gtt's post is anything to go by.

You can pick up a new replacement SIM from your local store :smileywink:

Cheers,

Lee

Re: HTC Desire - "Generic Network Failure" error message

To add to the above another call (4th one about this problem) and was told the mms sock was not turned on. It is now on and STILL no good. My wife and I are disappointed that a SMART phone doesn't do the simple task that has been around for years. Please Help!

Re: HTC Desire - "Generic Network Failure" error message

Right i'm going to dig this up again, as this is still an issue for me.

If my phone gets turned off or shuts down for any reason ie low battery (which seems to be getting extremely common seeing as after 12 months the battery refuses to charge fully) the mms apn i have set up is still there but my phone seems to 'forget' and it will not send or receive mms's again so the apn must be deleted and set up again which is painful & time consuming & gets extremely tedious after the 100th time.

Please could a member of the vodafone team please check my account to check that mms is set up correctly, as I am paying for a service that i'm not really receiving and a phone that doesn't really work properly at the moment and have been very close to just chucking the blooming thing out a window & going back to my ancient nokia 6230 which still works faultlessly!!

Please email if you need absolutely any further details as I'm sick to the back teeth of this now. (oh & I still can't load the update that I was having problems with before, yay)

(also is it just me or are others finding these forums painfully slow to load & freeze regularly when loading pages?)

Re: HTC Desire - "Generic Network Failure" error message

Hi trix

Thanks for your post here. I’m sorry to hear that you are having problems with this. I appreciate how frustrating this must be for you.

If MMS works after you have reset up your APN, then this will not be a problem with your account.

To be honest, with all the problems you have listed, this sounds like a fault with the handset which will need to be repaired. Head over to the link below for all the information you need on how you can go about this. Also, its worth mentioning, while you phone is away they will also update the firmware for you to the latest version.

I have just had this message for the first time. I have read the various posts but am not sure what I should do or if you have resolved the problem. I am not very technically-minded.

Re: HTC Desire - "Generic Network Failure" error message

Hi jancholland,

Can I ask if this was a one off or if it now happening to all MMS that you send?

If it is on all messages I would back up all of your data and try a master reset.

Once done test again, if this continues then you will need to send the pone away for a free of charge repair.
