HTC Desire HD - Will It Get Vodafone Branding?

Hi

I'm considering getting a Desire HD.

However, I have read on this forum the threads regarding the original Desire and the Samsung Galaxy S updates.

The Vodafone update was removed from the original Desire. It hasn't been removed from the Galaxy S. The threads are long, but my take on the explanation for this is that the Desire was sold as an unbranded phone, while the Galaxy S wasn't. Therefore Vodafone did back down and remove the update from the Desire, but are not doing so with the Galaxy S.

I don't want to start a 24 month contract for a new Desire HD, only to get an update similar to the Galaxy S which appears to be causing many users to be unhappy with their new phone.

Can anyone (especially someone from Vodafone) confirm what the plans are for the Desire HD. Will it too get an update with Vodafone branding/bloatware? Will it definitely not be getting Vodafone branding/ bloatware? Can no one confirm either way?

This is tremendously important for me, and I would guess many people, before committing to a 24 month contract.

HTC Desire HD - Will It Get Vodafone Branding?

There are a number of threads already covering BUT at present no DHDs are reported branded. To be safe, get it from a 3rd party retailer like CPW as this might change in future

The HTC Desire HD will not be branded by Vodafone... The handset will not be branded this has been confirmed by the VF over the phone

I was told that by VF as well, apparently they're not allowed to.

However, since then I've become less inclined to believe a single word and VF representative says

Neil (settling for his third handset that turned up without warning!)

The best way I have found to deal with Vodafone is on the phone. Whenever they answer a question, you can ask them to record it in your notes. Make sure you check what they write by getting them to read it back before you hang up. Vodafone do honour these agreements and I have achieved some amazing deals this way. It has also kept me as a customer.

Good luck.

Unless you have it in writing you have no proof what was ever said and id doubt most cs even know what branding is. Ive had it on many occasions where they have said they have put something on my notes just for the next time i call there is no record of the previous conversation. And just because it may appear not to have much on the phone when you get it, dont be fooled into thinking it will stay like that. If it is running Vodas firmware and not htc's generic firmware they can put whatever they want into it at any point in future updates like they did on the original Desire. This included even putting bookmarks to dating websites in the browser. Id get it in writing first to be sure.
The best place for an answer would be from a mod on here as they have a lot more idea of whats going on.

Well currently the only sign of anything from VF is the carrier name on the lock screen and the sim toolkit in the apps list.
I was talking to someone in the retention team when I was told they cannot brand the phones, they seem more knowledgable than the normal CS cannon fodder.

SIM toolkit is on all phones, the content changes with the SIM card, and obviously the lock screen will show your current operator so neither are branding per se...

Hope Vodafone don't decide to start branding it, the device obviously works without their apps so there's no need to do it!!

My desire is vodafone software branded i,e it has the voda software code, and after trying my 3 sim in it, on the lock screen it does not display the 3 logo, but on putting a voda sim in, it displays vodafone uk. must be something in the software that prevents other networks showing on the lock screen.

Naughty vodafone for that, as if I want to sell the phone on, as it is unlocked and to all accounts running standard froyo all be it with vodafone settings, it means the buyer or my self for that fact ( as I have no intention of selling it) will not have this feature with another network sim in it.

Just hope they do not add branding or their own software code in the HD, before I get the chance to upgrade.

Hmmmm, although it's Vodafone's vendor code it should for intent and purposes be unbranded due to the debacle of the previous 1.24 update. I've never tried a non-VF SIM card in my generic Desire to see if it displays the operator but it would only do it once yu have reception...

As far as i know they may of done a little bit like a splash screen and the internet/mms settings. But this still stops owners getting generic updates and also leaves them open to branding in the future.

Thanks for all your responses everyone.

I wonder if anyone from Vodafone would like to add their position?

Just do as I suggested in post #2, saves all the hassle of whether Vodafone will brand it as you'd get an unbranded handset

With my 3 sim in it, it had plenty of reception, could use it for data and calls, but as I said, there was no operator name displayed on the lock screen. If you pulled the notification bar down, you had the 3 operator displayed there, so it must be something to do with the vodafone software code. Still it has a vodafone PAYG sim in it now, and displays vodafone operator name on the lock screen.

I really hope vf don't brand. I have mine on order and really want to be able to get updates as htc releases them. Do you owners get updates as htc releases them or do you have to wait for vf to faf with it first?
